Riverside Romance at Victoria Falls Town
Romance at Victoria Falls comes in three settings: on the water, at the table and under the moon. Pick one for each evening of a stay and the rest of the days can stay quiet. These ideas are sorted by setting, with the details you need to book.
On the water
The Zambezi above the falls is wide and calm, and a sunset cruise is the first choice for most couples. The boats pass islands and sandbars where hippos and crocodiles rest, and elephants sometimes wade across at dusk. A ZimParks levy of US$12 is added to each ticket. For a more private evening, resellers sell the luxury cruiser Ra-Ikane from about US$80 to US$240, so compare the inclusions. Seating is limited, which is why early booking helps.
At the table
Three places stand out for a special meal:
- Stanley’s Terrace, Victoria Falls Hotel. The 1904 hotel faces the bridge across its lawns. Afternoon tea here suits a slower day, and smart-casual dress is the norm. See victoriafallshotel.com .
- The Lookout Cafe. Wild Horizons runs it on the Batoka Gorge rim. It was destroyed by fire on 24 December 2018 and reopened on 1 December 2019. Confirm it is open before you plan the evening.
- The Boma. Dinner and drumming at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is lively rather than hushed, so it suits couples who like a party. It runs from about 19:00 to 22:00.
Under the moon
During the full moon and the nights on either side, the national park opens after dark for lunar rainbow viewing. International visitors pay about US$116 each. Bring a tripod for photos and a light jacket for the spray.
From above
The Flight of Angels helicopter takes 12 to 13 minutes. Reseller prices run about US$150 to US$190, plus a US$18 park levy per person.
Where to sleep
Riverside lodges are the usual choice for a honeymoon or anniversary. Three riverside options are Victoria Falls River Lodge, The Old Drift Lodge and Matetsi Victoria Falls. Rates and inclusions differ, so read each lodge’s own site.
Getting around safely
- Take taxis or lodge transfers after dark. Elephants, buffalo and hippos graze in streets and hotel grounds.
- Stay behind the barriers, or well back where there are none, at cliff viewpoints.
- Never swim in the river outside a pool run by an operator.
