Shows and Events in Geghard

Located in the Kotayk Province of Armenia, Geghard is a monastery complex whose main cultural experiences are its services and its acoustics.

The Echo of the Upper Chamber

• An external stair leads to the upper zhamatun, a rock-cut chamber dated 1288 with a very long, rich echo.
• Visitors hum softly to hear it. No concert or choir is part of a normal visit.

Liturgy Services

• Attend a liturgy service at Geghard’s main church, the Katoghike, which dates to 1215. Feast days and services may restrict entry to some rooms.
• Immerse yourself in the spiritual atmosphere and marvel at the intricate stone carvings that adorn the walls.

Stalls at the Gate

• Roadside stalls near the entrance sell gata and sujukh.
• Carry cash for the stalls and for parking, which costs about 200 AMD. Entry to the monastery is free.

The best time to visit Geghard is during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) when the weather is mild and comfortable.

Respect the monastery’s dress code by covering your shoulders and knees. Keep your voice low and stay out of services.

Getting There

Geghard is approximately 40 km (25 miles) east of Yerevan, Armenia’s capital city. Taxis and buses are available from Yerevan, or you can take a guided tour that includes transportation.

Language

While many locals speak some English, it’s still a good idea to learn basic Armenian phrases, such as “thank you” (շնորակալություն) and “hello” (Բարեւէ).
