Port Louis Sights from Fort to Waterfront

This route runs from the hill above the city down to the harbour, in ten stops.

From the hill

1. Fort Adelaide (La Citadelle). Built by the British in the 1830s on Sebastopol Hill, the fort overlooks the city and the harbour. Most sources give free entry and daily hours from about 08:00 to 20:00, while one 2026 guide mentions a small fee, so check on arrival. Late afternoon has the best light. Taxis save the steep climb from Plaine Verte.

Through the old centre

2. Place d’Armes and Government House. Look at the buildings from the pavement.

3. St Louis Cathedral.

4. Chinatown and the Chinese Friendship Gate.

5. Jumma Mosque, Royal Road. Dress modestly and take off your shoes. Opening times are worth confirming on the day.

6. Natural History Museum (Mauritius Institute). On La Chaussee beside Jardin de la Compagnie, its dodo displays are the highlight. Reported opening times: 09:00 to 16:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 11:00 to 16:00 Wednesday; 09:00 to 12:00 Saturday. Admission is described as free in most listings and Rs 75 for adults in one.

At the quay

7. Aapravasi Ghat. Quay Street, Trou Fanfaron. UNESCO inscribed it in 2006. From 1834 it received indentured labourers from India, close to half a million people by UNESCO’s count. Entry is reported free, with hours Monday to Friday 09:00 to 16:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 12:00, closed Sundays and holidays. Confirm with the Trust Fund before travelling. The Beekrumsing Ramlallah Interpretation Centre belongs to the same visitor offer.

8. Intercontinental Slavery Museum. The building is the former Military Hospital, dating from 1740, and the museum opened in September 2023. Ask about hours and any fee before arriving. Keep your voice low at both sites.

At the waterfront

9. Blue Penny Museum. Barkly Wharf, Caudan Waterfront. It holds the 1847 “Post Office” stamps and the Paul and Virginie artwork. Open Monday to Saturday, 09:30 to 16:00, with adults from abroad paying Rs 325. The stamps are lit for 10 minutes at quarter past each hour, with no photography in the room.

10. Mauritius Postal Museum. It is inside the General Post Office on the harbour front. Check its hours and fee before you walk over.

Practical points

  • Weekdays are best. Most sights close on Sunday, and the city centre empties from about 17:00.
  • Take water. Summer from November to April is hot and humid.
  • Petty crime occurs in Port Louis. Official advice is to avoid walking alone in unlit areas after dark, especially the business district’s backstreets.
