Walk Auckland's Coast to Coast Trail
Few cities let you walk from one ocean to the other in a single day. Auckland does, and the Coast to Coast Walkway is only the start of what’s worth covering on foot here.
The Coast to Coast Walkway (16km)
Starting at Te Wero Bridge on the Waitematā Harbour side and finishing at Taumanu Reserve on Manukau Harbour, this route threads through the Domain, Mount Eden, and One Tree Hill along the way. The full distance takes roughly 4 hours 20 minutes, needs no car and no guide, and is entirely reachable by public transport at either end.
Mount Eden’s rim, not the crater
Boardwalks circle the rim of Mount Eden’s crater, Te Ipu-a-Mataaho, with the downtown skyline behind you for most of the loop. Entering the crater bowl itself is prohibited out of respect for its sacred status to mana whenua, not a rule to weigh against a better photo angle. Devonport’s heritage streets
A short ferry ride across the harbour puts you among Victorian and Edwardian villas, then up onto Mount Victoria and across to North Head, where WWII-era gun emplacement tunnels run through the hill. Bring a torch; the tunnels aren’t lit. Book a guided Devonport walk if you’d rather have the history explained as you go.
Waitakere Ranges: know the rahui before you go
The interior bush tracks of the Waitākere Ranges have been closed by default since a rāhui was placed in December 2017 to slow kauri dieback disease. The beaches themselves, Piha, Karekare, and Muriwai, stay open, but any connecting bush track requires using the boot-cleaning hygiene stations at the trailhead. Treat this as an enforced rule, not a courtesy, and check Auckland Council’s live track status map before naming a specific track as open.
Karangahape Road (K Road)
Street art, indie boutiques, and historic arcades reward a slow wander more than a fixed route, since what’s worth seeing changes with whatever’s currently painted on a given wall. If curated Māori public art is more your speed than general street art, book a guided walk near Britomart covering newer commissions downtown.

Start the Coast to Coast Walkway early. It’s the longest route here by a wide margin, and starting late means finishing the Manukau Harbour end in the dark during winter months.
