Kaikoura Walks: Match the Track to Your Day
Every walk around Kaikōura is self-guided: free DOC tracks, plus one private farm route that takes several days. The best choice depends less on fitness than on whether you have a car, how long you have and who is with you, so the walks below are grouped that way.
If you have no car
The Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway starts in town. DOC rates the full loop at about 11.7 km and recommends at least 3 hours, and it is free. You can stop wherever you like because the sections are short.
From the town centre it is 4.4 km (roughly 50 minutes) to the Point Kean car park, then a 200 m path of about 5 minutes to the viewpoint. The track carries on for 1.5 km (around 25 minutes) to Whalers Bay, and a last 1.1 km (around 20 minutes) reaches South Bay.
Read the tide table before you start, because high water can close the shoreline, and avoid the Whalers Bay shoreline on the way back. Cliff edges have no fences. Dogs are allowed on only three sections. Fur seals sit close to the track, so stay at least 20 m away, leave them a clear route to the sea and keep children and dogs back.
If you have a car and a morning
The Mt Fyffe car park is about 15 km from town, reached along Ludstone, Swamp and Postman’s Roads. No vehicles may go beyond it, and mountain bikers use the same track.
- Hinau Track: a loop of about 45 minutes through large hīnau trees. It crosses a stream with no bridge, and it works for families.
- Mt Fyffe Forest Walk: DOC lists it in the same area.
- The lookout near the firepond: about 1 hour above the car park, a good goal if you do not want a full day.
Severe weather has damaged roads in the region, and the July 2026 flood hit this valley. Look at NZTA Journeys, the Kaikōura District Council and the DOC page before you set out, and pack a windbreaker even for the lookout.
If you want a full day
Mt Fyffe Hut is about 5 hours return, listed by DOC as a 14 km round trip on the same track. The summit sits at 1,602 m and is reached by a very steep south-west ridge. Leave your plan with someone, start early and carry water.
If you want several days
The Kaikōura Coast Track is a private walk over farmland in the Hurunui district. Its operator is at 356 Conway Flat Road, Cheviot. It takes two or three days, with luggage carried for you, and listed prices are about $230 for adults and $180 for children. Ask the operator which itinerary is current and what it costs.
What to carry
- Sturdy shoes, water and a windbreaker.
- A tide table for the peninsula.
- A map, because these are self-guided tracks.
