Travel advisory: The US government advises against all travel to Myanmar. The UK government advises against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of Mandalay, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Mandalay Region including the city. Conflict, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns are ongoing, and many sites suffered damage in the March 2025 earthquake. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.

Walking in Mandalay Region

Under current official advice, walking tours in Mandalay Region cannot be recommended, and no organised operators can be verified. Mandalay has little pedestrian infrastructure, heat is intense from March to May, and the area north of the city is under the UK’s advice against all travel.

Practical notes

• Wear comfortable shoes and light clothing, and carry water and sun protection.
• Dress modestly at temples and monasteries and remove shoes before entering.
• Keep valuables secure, and expect cash to be the main means of payment, since many ATMs reject foreign cards.
• Checkpoints are common, so carry a passport.
