Walk the Jungle Trail to 3 Maya Temples
Somewhere overhead, a black howler monkey is about to let out a roar loud enough to make you jump, and it will happen while you are standing beneath a strangler fig on the walking trail at Lamanai, not in a zoo enclosure.
The Lamanai Archaeological Trail
This shaded circuit runs about 3.5 kilometers and takes 2.5 to 3 hours beneath towering cohune palms, mahogany, and strangler fig trees. The route runs from the Site Museum to the Mask Temple (Structure N9-56), past the ancient ball court, on to the High Temple (Structure N10-43), then the Jaguar Temple (Structure N10-9), before passing 19th-century British sugar mill ruins and 16th-century Spanish colonial church foundations along the lagoon shore. Black howler monkeys resident directly overhead provide a soundtrack the entire way, deep enough to feel through the ground as much as hear.
The Orange Walk Town circuit
Back in town, a shorter walk of about 2 kilometers takes roughly 1.5 hours and covers Queen Elizabeth Park, the town’s central square and a good starting point; Taco Alley, where generational street vendors sell the town’s famous tacos; the Banquitas House of Culture along the restored riverbank boardwalk, with exhibits on the 1872 Battle of Orange Walk and Maya artifacts; and La Inmaculada Catholic Church, reflecting the town’s Mestizo heritage. It is a completely different kind of walk from the Lamanai trail: flat, urban, and food-driven rather than jungle and ruins.
Choosing between the two
Do the town circuit first, ideally in the morning before the heat sets in, since it doubles as a good orientation walk and a breakfast taco stop. Save the Lamanai trail for a full boat-trip day, since it is not something you reach on foot from town.
What each walk actually demands
The jungle trail has uneven ground, tree roots, and full canopy shade, so sturdy footwear matters more than sun protection there, while repellent matters throughout, especially in the wetter months from June to November. The town circuit is flat pavement and open sun, so a hat and water matter more than bug spray.
Verdict: the jungle trail is the better walk by far if you only have time for one, since the temples and the howler monkeys are unlike anything else on this list, but the town circuit is worth an hour if you’re already based in Orange Walk between other trips. For what you’ll actually be looking at along both routes, see the sightseeing guide .
Wear closed shoes with real tread for the Lamanai trail; the packed dirt path turns slick fast after even a short afternoon shower.
