Uruguay Walking Tours by Length of Walk
Uruguay is flat enough that nearly every walk is easy, so the real choice is how long you want to be out. Here are the routes, from a stroll before dinner to a day on foot.
About an hour: Colonia and the Punta del Este peninsula
The Barrio Histórico of Colonia del Sacramento can be crossed in an hour at a slow pace. Go in through the Portón de Campo and its drawbridge, follow the Calle de los Suspiros, with its central drainage channel, and finish on the wooden pier for the sunset. Entry to the quarter is free, and the Faro de Colonia lighthouse charges a small fee if you want the view. From Montevideo the coach takes about 2h45.
At Punta del Este, the walk is the port, where sea lions wait for scraps from the fishmongers, and then the peninsula to the lighthouse. La Mano, the sculpture of five concrete fingers on Playa Brava, is free and a short walk away.
Half a day: Ciudad Vieja and the Sarandí
Begin at Plaza Independencia, beside the Artigas mausoleum, which is free. Go through the Puerta de la Ciudadela and along the pedestrian Sarandí, past galleries and cafes. The site of Café La Giralda, where the tango “La Cumparsita” was first played in 1917, is on the way, and Mercado del Puerto is the lunch stop at the end. A full day: the Rambla
The Rambla is a continuous 22 km waterfront path, and you do not need to walk all of it. A good section runs from Pocitos to Punta Carretas, with locals carrying thermoses and mate gourds under their arms. The national tourism site lists events along the shore. Carry water, because shade is scarce, and start early in summer.
A long weekend: Rocha on foot
Cabo Polonio has no roads, so the beach is the path. Cars and buses stop at the Ruta 10 terminal, km 264.5, and an open 4x4 truck takes you in for UYU 470 return. Walk to the sea lion colony below the 1881 lighthouse, and carry pesos in cash, because the village has no mains power. Tents and pets are not allowed. Nearby, Santa Teresa National Park is free from Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00 to 18:00, and its fortress costs UYU 50. The Rocha tourism schedule has truck times.
Practical points
Wear comfortable shoes for cobbles and sand. In winter, from June to August, the weather is cool and windy, and many coastal cafes close.
