Workshops Mandalay
Travel advisory: The US government advises against all travel to Myanmar. The UK government advises against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of Mandalay, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Mandalay Region including the city. Conflict, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns are ongoing, and many sites suffered damage in the March 2025 earthquake. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Traditional Crafts in Mandalay
Mandalay has long been known for traditional crafts, including marble carving, wood carving, weaving and gold leaf beating. No workshop in the city can currently be confirmed open, and conditions have changed since the March 2025 earthquake.
Marble carving
Marble carvers historically turned raw stone into Buddha images by hand, in work that filled the air with marble dust.
Wood carving
Wood carvers made furniture, door panels and ornaments for temples and homes.
Weaving
Weavers produced silk and cotton textiles on traditional looms.
Gold leaf
Gold leaf is used to gild Buddha images and temples across Myanmar. Beating it by hand was a skilled, labour-intensive craft.
Practical notes
- Respect the artisans’ workspace and ask before touching anything.
- Remove shoes where required.
