6 Best Day Trips from Manama, Bahrain

Travel advisory: Bahrain is currently a participant in the 2026 regional conflict involving Iran, and Manama has sustained direct strikes, including a drone strike on a hotel in the city. Governments including the US State Department and the UK FCDO currently advise extra caution or against travel to Bahrain. Check your government’s current advisory before booking anything. This guide is for planning ahead, not a trip right now.
Bahrain is roughly 50km end to end, so every “day trip” from Manama is really a half-day excursion. Rent a car and you can string two or three of these together in one day.
1. Muharraq and the Pearling Path
The richest half-day from Manama. Muharraq was Bahrain’s capital until 1932 and is the heart of its pearling history, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2012) via the 3.5km Pearling Path linking 17 historic buildings and Bu Maher Fort. Add the last hand-built dhow shipyard in the country, Arad Fort, and the Muharraq Souq for halwa Bahraini. Roughly 20-30 minutes from central Manama.
2. The Tree of Life (Shajarat al-Hayat)
A lone mesquite tree, around 400 years old, standing alone in the southern desert roughly 40km from Manama with no obvious water source. Local lore ties it to the Garden of Eden, which is legend, not fact, but the site draws about 65,000 visitors a year regardless. There are no facilities here, so it’s a landmark stop, not a destination in itself. A rental car is effectively required; best visited at sunset.
3. A’ali: Dilmun Burial Mounds and Pottery
The third UNESCO site (2019), roughly 15km southwest of Manama: fields of Dilmun-era burial mounds alongside a working pottery town where you can buy directly from workshops. 30-45 minutes, longer with a guide, since the total number of mounds islandwide is genuinely contested across sources.
4. Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir
The Sakhir circuit hosted the first F1 race in the Middle East, but the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix has been relocated to Sepang, Malaysia because of the regional conflict, so there’s no race here this year. Non-race experiences like track tours may still run; verify current schedules with the circuit directly. About 30-40 minutes from Manama, next to Al Areen.
5. Al Areen Wildlife Park, Sakhir
Established in 1976, this roughly 7-square-kilometer reserve runs as a safari-style, tour-bus drive rather than a walking zoo, home to Arabian oryx and dozens of other species. About 40 minutes from Manama.
6. King Fahd Causeway and Passport Island
The 25km causeway to Saudi Arabia, opened in 1986, has a midpoint “Passport Island” with two 65-metre observation towers offering Gulf views, worth the drive even if you’re not continuing into Saudi Arabia (which requires a Saudi visa).
