7 Best Day Trips from Melbourne
Melbourne’s city core easily fills 3 to 4 days on its own, but Victoria’s day-trip radius is what turns a city break into something bigger. All of the trips below run about 1 to 3 hours from the CBD, covering coast, wine country, wildlife, gold rush history and mountains. Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles
The marquee trip, and the one visitors most often underestimate: doing it in a single day is an honest 12-hour rush, covering roughly 3 hours inland or 4 hours along the coast each way. Two days and one night, with stops at Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay and the koalas at Kennett River before reaching the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge, works far better. Drive it yourself or book a bus day tour.
Yarra Valley
About 1 hour 15 minutes from the CBD, the Yarra Valley is a genuine single-day trip built around wine. Cellar doors sit alongside Healesville Sanctuary, where kangaroos and koalas are easy to see up close. Car or an organised tour both work.
Phillip Island
Around 1.5 to 2 hours away, Phillip Island’s Penguin Parade is the draw, and the little penguins come ashore at dusk, which means a late return. Only a car or a guided tour reaches the Parade; the regular V/Line bus doesn’t serve it. Tickets run about AUD $33 and sell out, so book ahead.
Dandenong Ranges
An easy hour east, and the one trip here that doesn’t need a car: Metro trains run to Belgrave, from where the heritage Puffing Billy steam train climbs into the ranges.
Mornington Peninsula
About an hour to 90 minutes south, the Peninsula works as a day trip for the Peninsula Hot Springs and wineries, or as an overnight in Sorrento or Portsea for a slower pace. The famous Brighton bathing boxes are in Melbourne’s own bayside suburbs, not out on the Peninsula, a common mix-up.
Ballarat and Sovereign Hill
About 90 minutes west, Ballarat’s Sovereign Hill is a recreated 1850s gold rush town that fills a full day on foot, and it’s reachable by V/Line train if you’d rather not drive.
Grampians (Gariwerd)
The furthest trip on this list at 2.5 to 3 hours, and honestly too far for a comfortable single day. An overnight in Halls Gap makes the drive worthwhile for the mountain scenery.
Closer options worth a mention if you only have a spare half day: Werribee Open Range Zoo is about 30 minutes out, and Bendigo or Geelong are both reachable by V/Line train in under 2 hours.
