Best Day Trips From Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh’s own sights are honestly done in about 2-3 days, so once the Royal Palace and the memorial sites are behind you, a day trip is the better use of extra time. One trap to clear up first: Angkor Wat is not a Phnom Penh day trip. Siem Reap is about 300km and 5-6 hours away by road (or a short flight), a separate multi-day destination in its own right.
Koh Dach (Silk Island)
About 15km from the city, 30-45 minutes including a short ferry crossing, Koh Dach is the closest genuine escape. The island runs on silk weaving, and villages along the road let you watch the process from mulberry leaf to woven scarf. Rent a bicycle at the ferry landing and ride the loop road past stilted houses and rice paddies; it’s a half-day trip, easy to combine with a late lunch back in the city.
Oudong
Cambodia’s former royal capital sits about 40km northwest, roughly 1-1.5 hours by road. A former capital until the 1860s, Oudong is a ridge of hilltop stupas reached by a climb of around 500 steps, with views over the surrounding countryside at the top. Go early to beat the heat on the climb; plan a half to full day depending on how long you linger.
Tonle Bati and Ta Prohm
About 30-40km south, an hour’s drive, Tonle Bati pairs a small Angkorian-era temple, Ta Prohm (not the famous one in Siem Reap, a smaller namesake), with a lakeside popular for local picnics on weekends. It’s an easy half-day, light on crowds outside weekends.
Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre
Roughly 36-40km south, Phnom Tamao is Cambodia’s largest wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center, home to rescued elephants, sun bears, and big cats that can no longer survive in the wild. Many visitors combine it with nearby Phnom Chisor temple for a full day out.
Kirirom National Park
The furthest of the realistic day trips, Kirirom is 100-120km southwest, about 2-3 hours each way. The payoff is a highland pine forest, noticeably cooler than the city, with waterfalls and picnic spots; this is the closest thing to real hiking anywhere near Phnom Penh. Budget a full day given the drive.
Kampot and Kep: better as an overnight
Kampot’s pepper farms and Kep’s crab market are about 136km away, 3-4 hours each way, which makes a same-day round trip exhausting for what you’d actually get to see. Most travelers who make it this far stay at least one night; it fits naturally onto a longer itinerary rather than a rushed day out.
