Two days in Tallinn is enough to see the Old Town properly, so if you have a third or fourth day, spend it outside the walls. Estonia packs its best day trips close to the capital, and the two that suit a short visit best need almost no planning: a national park an hour out, and a whole second country a fast ferry across the water. Here are the runs worth making, easiest first.
Lahemaa National Park
The simplest escape from the city. Lahemaa sits about 1 hour away by bus or car, and it delivers the Estonian landscape people picture: the Viru Bog boardwalk winding across open peatland, Jagala Waterfall (the country’s largest natural falls), and restored manor houses at Sagadi and Palmse. Go in the morning, walk the boardwalks, grab lunch in a fishing village like Kasmu or Altja, and be back by late afternoon. Pack proper shoes, because boardwalk mud is real even in summer.
Helsinki by ferry
The showpiece day out, if you have the hours for it. Tallink’s fastest sailings cross to Finland in about 2 to 2.25 hours from the D-Terminal, a 10 to 15 minute walk from Old Town; slower operators run closer to 3.5. Fares swing roughly 14 to 40-plus euros depending on operator and timing, and peak-summer and weekend departures sell out, so book ahead. Be honest with yourself about the maths: between the crossing and the port logistics it burns most of a day, so it earns its place on a longer trip more than a two-day one.
Parnu
If your visit runs to four days or more, Parnu is worth the 1.5 to 2 hour bus south. It is a sandy beach town with a spa tradition going back over 180 years, water that warms into the low-to-mid 20s Celsius by midsummer, and a long seafront promenade. It suits a slow day rather than a rushed one, so treat it as a full commitment or leave it for next time.
Rakvere
A good weather backup. About 1 to 1.5 hours out, Rakvere trades bogs for a hilltop order-castle that runs knight tournaments, archery and an alchemist’s workshop through summer, closer to living theatre than a static museum, and it draws a fraction of Lahemaa’s crowds. Handy if the forecast turns against a day of open boardwalks.
Getting there and back
Buses from the main terminal cover Lahemaa, Parnu and Rakvere; Bolt is easy within the city but not the tool for these longer runs. One route to leave off the list entirely: crossing into Russia at Narva is not a casual day trip in 2026, with reduced border hours and unpredictable closures. Book your bus or ferry the night before in high season, since the popular morning departures fill up.
