Things to Do Beyond Ljubljana
Stay in Ljubljana and the rest of Slovenia opens up as a set of day trips (this is Slovenia, bordering Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, not Slovakia). The city itself is a walking day; everything below is about what you actually do once you head out, from a boat on a glacial lake to a raft on a turquoise river. A rental car makes most of these far easier, since the sites connect poorly to each other by public transport. Prices are 2026 and worth verifying on the official sites.
Row or ride out to Bled Island
The pletna boatman rows you across for 20 EUR round trip, cash only, or you can rent a wooden boat and row yourself for roughly 25 to 30 EUR the first hour. Landing on the island adds 12 EUR for the church and its wishing bell. Above the lake, Bled Castle is 19 EUR adult. Do it at opening, before the tour buses take the shoreline by mid-morning.
Ride the Vogel cable car at Bohinj
From Ukanc at the west end of Lake Bohinj, the cable car climbs to 1,535m for 28 EUR return (22 EUR one-way), with a cheaper tier for ages 14 to 25 and 60-plus. The view over the lake and into Triglav National Park is the best elevated one you can reach without a real hike. Bohinj is also the calmer lake for a swim.
Walk the Vintgar Gorge
Wooden walkways run through a river canyon 4km outside Bled, 15 EUR adult, sold in hourly timed slots (book at least 48 hours ahead in peak summer). It is open roughly April to October depending on water levels.
Go underground at the caves
Postojna’s underground train and chambers are 34.90 EUR, with the cliff-face Predjama Castle nearby at 24 EUR; combined bundles run roughly 55 to 85 EUR, so check the inclusions on the official site first. The UNESCO-listed Skocjan Caves (roughly 16 to 24 EUR, verify on site) trade the train for a dramatic collapsed canyon and more walking. Both sit at a constant 10C, so bring a layer. Book a cave day tour if you would rather not drive.
Raft the Soca and drive the Vrsic Pass
The turquoise Soca river around Bovec is a whitewater rafting and canyoning hub, a full day out via Tolmin or the switchbacking Vrsic Pass through the Alps. Book rafting with a local operator, and check the pass is open, since snow can close it outside summer.
Walk the coast at Piran
The car-free Venetian old town, the town walls, and a seafood lunch make an easy coastal day; park at the Fornace garage on the edge of town (1.20 EUR/hour) and walk in.
