Striezelmarkt: 25 November-24 December 2026
The Striezelmarkt is one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets, running since 1434, and the 2026 edition runs 25 November through 24 December. Expect stalls selling PGI-protected Dresdner Christstollen (look for the numbered Stollensiegel), Glühwein, and handmade wooden ornaments, alongside the Advent-season Stollenfest, which parades a giant ceremonial stollen through the Altstadt. The Dresdner Musikfestspiele, running 14 May through 14 June 2026, is Dresden’s major classical music festival, drawing international orchestras and soloists to venues across the city, including the Semperoper. It’s a multi-week program rather than a single event, so check the lineup for dates that match your visit.
Elbhangfest: 26-28 June 2026
Elbhangfest, a riverside neighborhood festival held 26-28 June 2026, takes over the Elbe hillside districts (the “Elbhang”) with music, art, and food stalls spread across a stretch of the riverbank rather than a single venue. It’s a genuinely local event, less tourist-oriented than the Christmas market, and a good pick if you want a summer weekend that feels like the city rather than a set-piece attraction.
13 February: remembrance, not a festival
Every 13 February, Dresden holds a formal, factual remembrance of the 1945 firebombing, marked by an official ceremony and a citizens’ human chain around the old town, a tradition since 2010 that honors the roughly 25,000 people who died and pushes back against far-right groups who use the date to promote inflated casualty figures. This isn’t a festival to plan a trip around for entertainment, but it’s worth knowing about if your visit lands on that date; the city stays open and functioning, the mood in the Altstadt is simply more subdued that day.
Filmnächte am Elbufer: summer open-air cinema
Through the summer months, the riverside hosts Filmnächte am Elbufer, an open-air cinema series screening a mix of mainstream and art-house films against a backdrop of the Elbe. It runs across multiple weeks rather than fixed dates, check the current program for a schedule that fits your visit.

One concrete tip: if the Striezelmarkt is the draw, book both accommodation and any Green Vault or Zwinger tickets well ahead of late November, this is Dresden’s highest-demand stretch, and same-week availability disappears fast.
