Panama City Festivals and Events
Panama City’s event calendar clusters around January and November, with Carnival splitting the difference in February or March depending on when Ash Wednesday falls that year.
Panama Jazz Festival (January)
Renowned musicians play venues across the city for a week, closing with a free outdoor concert in the Central Quadrangle. If your dates are flexible, mid-January is worth building a trip around.
Carnival (the 4 days before Ash Wednesday, February/March)
Las Tablas, a few hours west, is where Carnival gets its biggest reputation, but Panama City runs its own more urban version: parades, costumes, and street parties that take over whole neighborhoods for four days straight. Expect hotel prices to spike and some businesses to close.
Semana Santa (Holy Week, March/April)
Good Friday is a hard rest day here, with many restaurants and shops closed and processions taking over Casco Viejo’s streets. Plan around it rather than expecting a normal service day.
Mes de la Patria: 5 dates in November, not one
November gets called the month of the homeland for a reason: five separate patriotic dates fall inside it, and conflating them is an easy mistake. November 3 marks Panama’s 1903 separation from Colombia, the big one. November 4 honors the national symbols (flag, anthem, shield). November 5 is Colón Day. November 10 is the “First Cry” of independence in Los Santos, 1821. November 28 marks independence from Spain itself, also 1821. Expect parades and school marching bands throughout the month, with November 3 and 28 drawing the largest crowds downtown.
Festival del Cristo Negro (October 21, Portobelo)
Not in the city itself, but close enough to fold into a Caribbean day trip: tens of thousands of purple-robed pilgrims process through Portobelo to honor the Black Christ, a Catholic pilgrimage that also carries deep Afro-Panamanian resistance heritage. Treat it as an event to witness respectfully, not a photo opportunity.
Before you lock in dates
Carnival and Semana Santa both move with the church calendar, so confirm exact dates for your travel year before booking flights around either one. The Mes de la Patria dates are fixed every year, November 3, 4, 5, 10, and 28, which makes them the easiest of this bunch to actually build a trip around without checking a calendar first. The Panama Jazz Festival and Cristo Negro dates tend to hold steady year to year as well, but it’s still worth confirming before you commit flights.
