Rotterdam’s biggest events have real anchor dates, not vague “sometime in summer” listings. North Sea Jazz, the world’s biggest indoor jazz festival, and the Rotterdam Marathon are the two draws worth planning a whole trip around, and rooms near Ahoy or the finish line fill up fast in the weeks before either. North Sea Jazz Festival, the biggest indoor jazz festival anywhere
Founded in 1976 by Paul Acket, North Sea Jazz drew over 9,000 visitors across six stages for its debut, headlined by Count Basie, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie. It moved to Ahoy Rotterdam in 2006 after its original Hague venue was demolished, and now runs fifteen stages with roughly 1,200 musicians and about 25,000 visitors a day over the second weekend of July, officially billed as “NN North Sea Jazz Festival” since 2017. Rotterdam Marathon, a genuine world-record course
Run every April since 1981, the Rotterdam Marathon’s flat, fast course produced men’s marathon world bests here from Carlos Lopes in 1985 and Belayneh Dinsamo in 1988, a record that stood until 1998. It’s been an IAAF/World Athletics Gold Label race since 2012, branded the “NN Rotterdam Marathon,” and drew 16,837 finishers in 2023, the most popular marathon in the Netherlands. Expect road closures across the city centre on race day itself.
International Film Festival Rotterdam, since 1972
Founded by Huub Bals and held every late January, IFFR focuses on independent, experimental and arthouse film, with industry sidebars CineMart and BoostNL connecting filmmakers to funding. It’s one of Europe’s significant film festivals after more than 50 editions, and a quieter, cheaper time to visit the city than the summer festival season.
King’s Day and Zomercarnaval
King’s Day (Koningsdag), 27 April nationwide, brings the same orange-clad street-party and free-market conventions to Rotterdam as the rest of the Netherlands. Zomercarnaval, a large Caribbean and Antillean-style street parade held in Rotterdam in July, reflects the city’s Surinamese and Cape Verdean communities directly; exact 2026 dates and the parade route change year to year, so check the official listing before booking around it specifically.
Wereldhavendagen, celebrating the port
Wereldhavendagen (World Port Days), held in early September, celebrates the working Port of Rotterdam with ship displays and demonstrations along the waterfront, a fitting bookend to a summer built around the water. Exact September dates shift annually, worth confirming before you fly if this is the reason for your trip.
When are Rotterdam’s biggest crowds and highest prices?
Around North Sea Jazz (July) and the Rotterdam Marathon weekend (April), plus the general summer peak of June-August. Late January during IFFR and the shoulder months of May and September are calmer and cheaper for the same sightseeing.
Do any of these need advance booking?
North Sea Jazz and the Rotterdam Marathon both do, tickets and race entries sell out ahead of the date. Zomercarnaval, King’s Day and Wereldhavendagen are free, open, walk-up events.
One concrete tip: if your trip touches North Sea Jazz weekend, book Kop van Zuid or city-centre accommodation months ahead, not weeks. Ahoy sits south of the river, and the closest rooms sell out first.
