Guilin earns the reputation: this is the karst landscape that has been on the 20-yuan banknote and in Chinese ink paintings for a thousand years, and in person it looks exactly like the pictures. The classic first-timer version strings together Guilin’s in-town hills, a Li River cruise down to Yangshuo, and an overnight in the Longji rice terraces, and it runs comfortably in 3 to 5 days. Budget roughly ¥500-800 a day mid-range, book your Li River cruise ticket before you land since it sells out April through November, and confirm which of 2026’s visa-free rules actually covers your passport before you buy flights.

The classic first-timer spine

Start in Guilin city itself: Elephant Trunk Hill (¥55, the arch is Water-Moon Cave, best at sunrise or sunset), Reed Flute Cave (¥90, a constant ~20°C illuminated cavern, bring a layer), and Seven Star Park (¥55, +¥45 for the cave, 120 hectares with a giant-panda zoo and Guilin’s oldest bridge). Give the city sights a full day, then head to the piers: both sit roughly 27-28km outside Guilin, so book a transfer or taxi as part of the trip, not a same-morning scramble.

The Li River cruise to Yangshuo is the headline: 3-star boats run ¥215 from Mopanshan Pier, 4-star boats ¥360-480 (meals included) from Zhujiang Pier, both one-way downstream through the Yangdi-Xingping stretch’s Nine Horse Fresco Hill and Yellow Cloth Shoal. Book a Li River cruise if you’d rather prebook in English; the WeChat mini-program is cheaper but Chinese-only. From Yangshuo, West Street is the tourist strip (fine for a first night), Moon Hill is the postcard limestone arch a short ride south, and Yulong River bamboo rafting (¥200-320 per raft) is the cheaper, calmer alternative to the main cruise. Cap the evening with Impression Sanjie Liu, Zhang Yimou’s Li River night show staged with real karst peaks as the backdrop (tiers ¥200-680, closed January-February).

With a fourth and fifth day, add an overnight in the Longji (Longsheng) rice terraces: Ping’an is easier and about 2 hours out, Dazhai/Jinkeng is wilder with a cable car and three sunrise/sunset viewpoints, about 2.5 hours out. A combined ¥80 ticket covers both areas plus Huangluo Yao Village. Do you need a visa for Guilin in 2026?

Depends on your passport. Around 46-50 nationalities (most of the EU, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea) get 30-day visa-free entry through 31 December 2026, no onward ticket required. Others, including US citizens, can use the 240-hour visa-free transit if continuing to a third country, entering via Guilin Liangjiang Airport. Anyone outside both schemes needs a standard tourist visa arranged in advance.

Check your specific nationality against the current list on visaforchina.cn before booking anything, since the transit option requires a confirmed onward ticket that airline staff check at boarding.

China is near-cashless: Alipay and WeChat Pay both let you link a foreign card via passport registration, no local bank account needed. Carry ¥500-1,000 in cash as backup anyway, especially before heading up to Longji, where foreign-card ATMs thin out fast. Google, Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram are all blocked, so install a VPN before you arrive (VPN sites are themselves blocked once you’re in) and switch to Amap or Baidu Maps and the DiDi app for rides.

When to go: river levels, terrace color, and Golden Week

Three calendars overlap here. The Li River runs clearest September-November; June carries the highest suspension risk, and winter forces a shortened Yangdi-Huashan route. The Longji terraces flood into mirror-like water mid-April through June, turn green over summer, and ripen gold from late September to mid-October (Ping’an colors about a week before Dazhai). Golden Week (National Day, 1-7 October 2026) sits right inside that golden-harvest window and hits crowds and prices hard, along with Labour Day (1-5 May). Aim for late September or 8-15 October instead if you can.

Guilin classic food: mifen, beer fish, and the Three Treasures

Start every morning with a bowl of Guilin mifen (rice noodles in a spiced pork-bone broth, ¥3-10, sold from 6am at shops all over town): this is what residents actually eat for breakfast, not a tourist dish. In Yangshuo, order beer fish (whole Li River fish braised in local Liquan beer, ginger and chili), priced per catty (about 500g), and confirm the weight and price out loud before the fish goes in the pan, since a higher bill after cooking is a recurring scam pattern. Bring home the Three Treasures: Sanhua rice liquor, Guilin chili sauce, and fermented bean curd, sold as gift boxes near Zhengyang Pedestrian Street.

Is Guilin’s karst a UNESCO World Heritage site?

Yes, partly. The Yangshuo/Li River landscape genuinely sits inside the South China Karst World Heritage listing (inscribed 2014), but the covered area is in Yangshuo County, not Guilin’s ticketed city hills. None of Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed Flute Cave, or Seven Star Park carry the designation themselves. It’s a scientific, geological listing, not a single site with a gate you walk through.
