Nature Trips Beyond Antwerp
Base yourself in Antwerp and some of Belgium’s best nature reserves come within a train ride, from a purple heath to a tidal bird sanctuary on the North Sea. Here are the natural places worth a day trip, and what each one is actually for.
Kalmthoutse Heide
North of the city toward the Dutch border, the Kalmthoutse Heide is a large cross-border heath of heather, pine, and drifting sand. It is the closest true wilderness to Antwerp, best in late summer when the heather turns purple, and a genuine destination for birds and open-sky landscape rather than a manicured park.
The Polders van Kruibeke
Just across the Scheldt southwest of the city, the Polders van Kruibeke is a large controlled-flood wetland, an important nature area for wading birds and wet grassland, with flat paths and hides. A quiet half-day close to home.
The Zwin
On the coast near Knokke, the Zwin is a tidal nature reserve of salt marsh and mudflat, one of the best birdwatching sites in Belgium and a stop on major migration routes. Reach it via the coast train and the Kusttram; a rewarding day for anyone who cares about birds and estuaries.
The coast and dunes
Beyond the beaches, the Belgian coast keeps stretches of protected dune, marram grass, and low woodland behind the promenade. From Ostend (about 1h35) the Kusttram links the coastal reserves, so a beach day can double as a nature one.
Hoge Kempen
Belgium’s first national park, in Limburg, is a broad landscape of pine forest, heath, and reclaimed mining terrain, with lakes and viewpoints. It is the farthest of these from Antwerp and needs a full day, but it is the region’s flagship wild place.
Practical notes
Every reserve here runs on same-day SNCB tickets from Antwerpen-Centraal, with the coast and Hoge Kempen taking a full day and Kalmthout and Kruibeke doable as half-days. Bring binoculars for the Zwin and the polders, sturdy shoes for the heath, and check return times, since rural and coastal services can run roughly hourly.
