6 Best Hikes Near Auckland

Auckland’s hiking is short and volcanic rather than long and remote, most of the walks below are under two hours and several need nothing more than a bus ticket. The one exception, a full crossing of the isthmus on foot, is the headline pick if you have a spare afternoon and want to see the city the way its 53 volcanic cones were meant to be seen. If a car helps for the ones further out, rent one here before you go. Our nature spots guide covers the shorter, less strenuous stops if a full hike isn’t the plan.

The Coast to Coast Walkway: harbour to harbour on foot
This is Auckland’s signature walk, roughly 16km from Te Wero Bridge on the Waitematā side to Taumanu Reserve at Onehunga Bay on the Manukau side, passing through the Auckland Domain, over Mt Eden, and through One Tree Hill/Cornwall Park along the way. Budget around 4 hours 20 minutes for the full distance, and the entire route is reachable by public transport at either end, so you can start downtown and bus back from Onehunga rather than doubling back on foot.
Do you need a car for Mt Eden or One Tree Hill?
No, both sit inside the city and are walkable or a short bus ride from the CBD. Mt Eden’s summit is a 30-45 minute round trip from the car park, vehicle access has been closed since 2016 so everyone walks the same short stretch. One Tree Hill’s summit walk takes about 20 minutes on a boardwalked track finished in 2026, with views back to Mt Eden, Rangitoto, and the Waitākere Ranges from the top.
Rangitoto’s summit walk
The only hike on this list that starts with a ferry: a 25-minute crossing, then roughly an hour each way to the summit, 7km round trip. Bring your own water and food, there’s none on the island and very little shade, and time your walk around your return sailing since it’s a pre-booked, return-only service. Check current sailings at fullers.co.nz , or book a guided Rangitoto hike if you’d rather have a guide handle the timing.
Hunua Ranges, for a proper day out
An hour southeast of the city, the Hunua Ranges hold two very different hikes. Hunua Falls itself is an easy 10-15 minute walk to a 30m waterfall, suitable for anyone. The Cossey’s Creek/Massey Track Loop is the real hike on this list, 3-4 hours through a drinking-water catchment forest, worth it if you want something that actually feels remote without leaving the region.
What about the Waitākere Ranges?
Approach with a caveat. A kauri-dieback rāhui has restricted most interior bush tracks since 2017, with only specific upgraded tracks open and mandatory boot-cleaning stations on those. The beaches at the western end, Piha, Karekare, Bethells, stay open regardless, but check Auckland Council’s live track-status map before committing to a specific Waitākere trail, closures shift as slip damage gets repaired.
One concrete tip
If you only have time for one hike, make it the Coast to Coast Walkway, it’s the only one that shows you the Domain, a volcanic cone, and both harbours in a single continuous route, and you don’t need a car for any part of it.
