Panama City doesn’t look like a hiking destination from the observation deck at Miraflores, but a free in-city climb and a genuine rainforest reserve 45 minutes out cover more ground than most visitors realize.
Ancon Hill (free, 30-45 minutes, in the city)
This is the hike to do if you only do one. It climbs through jungle in the middle of Panama City itself, no entry fee, no booking required, and the payoff at the top is a 360-degree view taking in the canal, the skyline, and the rainforest canopy at once. Go early or late in the day; sloths and toucans show up more reliably when the heat hasn’t driven them into cover, and the trail itself is shaded enough to make midday manageable if that’s your only window.
Soberania National Park via Gamboa (45-60 minutes out)
This is the real rainforest, not a city-park stand-in. Gamboa sits on the edge of Soberania and offers an aerial tram ride through the canopy for anyone who wants the rainforest experience without a multi-hour trek, plus guided boat tours past Monkey Island where howler and capuchin monkeys reliably appear. Pair a canopy tram morning with an afternoon boat tour to get both the elevated and water-level views of the same forest in one trip. Book a Gamboa rainforest and Monkey Island tour ahead of time since slots are limited, especially on weekends.
When to go
Dry season, mid-December through April, is the easier window: less mud, less rain to plan around, though the humidity never really lets up regardless of month. If you’re set on the wet season (May-November), mornings are drier than afternoons, since the rain here tends to arrive as a short, heavy downpour later in the day.
A guide or not?
Ancon Hill needs no guide; the path is obvious and well used, and you’ll pass other hikers the whole way up. A Soberania day benefits more from one, since a local guide knows where howlers and toucans tend to gather that morning and can put names to what you’re seeing on the tram. If you’re happy with the tram ride and boat tour alone, skip hiring anyone extra.
What to bring
