Hiking around Tallinn and Estonia
Estonia is a genuinely good hiking country, but almost none of that happens inside Tallinn. Treat the capital as the base and the trails as day trips, and the picture makes sense: an hour out, you get bog boardwalks, forest paths and a long, wild coastline. Here is where the real walking is.
Lahemaa National Park, the main event
About 1 hour from Tallinn, Lahemaa is the country’s best-known hiking ground. The Viru Bog boardwalk is the signature route, a marked loop across open peatland that feels far more remote than an hour from a capital should. Longer forest and nature trails run around Oandu, and coastal paths link the old fishing villages of Kasmu and Altja. It is easy, flat, well-signed walking rather than mountain trekking, and it suits almost any fitness level.
Manor parks and waterfalls
Within Lahemaa, the grounds of the Sagadi and Palmse manor houses add gentle landscaped walks, and Jagala Waterfall, the country’s largest natural falls, makes a short but worthwhile stop. Together they turn a hiking day into a mixed one, with history and scenery on the same route.
The Baltic coast
Estonia’s coastline is long, low and quiet, and much of it is walkable. North of Tallinn the shore around Lahemaa gives you sea-edge trails; further out, the Parnu coast to the south pairs beach walking with a resort town at the end of it. This is where you go for open horizons rather than forest cover.
What the city itself offers
For completeness: inside Tallinn, the Pirita coastal promenade and the paths through Kadriorg Park are the only real walking routes, both flat and short. They are fine for a morning, but they are not why anyone calls Estonia a hiking country.
Practical notes
Best May through September, when daylight is long and the boardwalks are dry-ish. Bring waterproofs and layers whatever the forecast, wear shoes that cope with mud, and check bus times back to Tallinn before you set out, since rural services thin out in the evening.
