Green Spaces in and near Tallinn
You do not come to Tallinn for wilderness, but you can break up the cobblestones easily. The city keeps a handful of genuinely good green and coastal spots within a short tram ride, and the real forest sits an hour out. Here is where to go when you want grass, sea air or shade rather than another museum.
Kadriorg Park
The city’s best green space by a distance. Kadriorg is Peter the Great’s 18th-century palace park, a calm spread of formal gardens, ponds and tree-lined avenues east of the centre. It is free to wander, quiet on weekday mornings, and an easy place to spend an unhurried hour or two with a coffee. The KUMU art museum sits at the far end of the same park if you want to pair a green break with a gallery, and the grounds stay open year-round whatever the season.
Pirita beach and promenade
About 15 minutes out, Pirita gives you a proper sandy beach, a seafront promenade, and a marina that hosted the 1980 Olympic sailing events, plus the atmospheric ruins of a 15th-century convent nearby. In summer it is where the city goes to swim and sit by the water.
The Danish King’s Garden and the seafront
Right in the Old Town, the small Danish King’s Garden below Toompea is a pocket of green with a view, named for the Danish conquest of 1219. Down at the water, the Reidi tee seafront gives you an open stretch of the Baltic coast to walk with the city behind you.
An hour out: Lahemaa’s forests
When you want actual nature, Lahemaa National Park is about 1 hour from the capital, all pine forest, peat bog and coastline. The Viru Bog boardwalk is the easy highlight, and Jagala Waterfall, the country’s largest natural falls, is nearby. It turns a city break into something greener without a long journey.
When to go
May through September is the season for all of this, with long daylight and warm-enough water at Pirita by midsummer. Winter strips the daylight back to a few hours, so the green spaces are quieter and starker but still walkable.
