Orlando runs on two theme-park giants and a real American city most first-timers never see. Walt Disney World’s four gates and Universal Orlando’s three (Epic Universe joined the lineup in May 2025) sit twenty to thirty minutes southwest of downtown, in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, not in Orlando proper, so a car or a steady rideshare budget is non-negotiable for the whole trip. FastPass and Genie+ are both retired: paid Lightning Lane runs the skip-the-line game now. Two or three days covers one resort properly. Give it five to seven and you get both resorts, a real rest day, and room for a day trip east to the Space Coast.

Pick your base before you price a single ticket. Lake Buena Vista keeps you inside the Disney bubble, International Drive sits closer to Universal and CityWalk, and Kissimmee runs noticeably cheaper for the same square footage. Getting to Orlando and getting around once you land
Orlando International Airport (MCO) is Florida’s busiest and now the 7th-busiest in the US, with a dedicated on-site Brightline station running higher-speed trains to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach in roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. That is a genuinely good way to bolt on a South Florida leg, but it does not touch Orlando’s own parks or downtown. Sanford International Airport (SFB), roughly 45-50 minutes from downtown and dominated by Allegiant, is worth checking only if it happens to serve your home airport directly. US domestic flyers should also know REAL ID enforcement tightened further in February 2026: a non-compliant license without a passport now means a $45 fee and real delay at TSA. International visitors from Visa Waiver countries need an ESTA (apply only at esta.cbp.dhs.gov), and that fee jumped to $40.27 as of January 2026, worth checking well before you fly.
Do you actually need a car in Orlando?
Yes. Disney and Universal each run excellent free transport inside their own property, monorails, buses, boats, the Skyliner gondola, but neither one reaches the other, downtown, or the airport. SunRail and LYNX exist and are cheap, but they skip Disney, Universal, and MCO entirely. Rent a car, or plan on rideshare fares stacking up over a full week; there is no realistic transit shortcut here.
Disney World vs. Universal Orlando: pick your resort (or do both)
Walt Disney World runs four parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, with one-day tickets running roughly $119-209 depending on the park and the date. It is the stronger pick for young kids, Disney nostalgia, and multi-generational trips. Universal Orlando is now a three-gate resort: Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe, which opened its five new themed lands on 22 May 2025, from Super Nintendo World to the Ministry of Magic. It plays better for teens, thrill-ride fans, and Harry Potter devotees, with one-day tickets from roughly $124-199. What happened to FastPass and Genie+?
Both are gone. Disney retired the free FastPass system in 2021, and its paid replacement, Genie+, was itself renamed Lightning Lane Multi Pass on 24 July 2024 (Individual Lightning Lane became Lightning Lane Single Pass). Multi Pass runs roughly $17-45 per person per day, averaging around $25-26 at Magic Kingdom. Universal’s own paid skip-the-line product, Express Pass, runs $119.99-$379.99 for a single park and day, but comes free at the resort’s three Premier hotels: Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Royal Pacific Resort, and Loews Portofino Bay.
How many days do you actually need in Orlando?
Two to three days is genuinely one resort’s parks, done right, not a rushed preview of Orlando as a whole. Five to seven days is where the trip becomes a full Orlando vacation: both resorts, a real rest day, and room for a day trip. A different park every single day for a full week is the single most common way this trip burns people out.
Scale it like this: Days 1-2 go deep on one resort (Disney’s Magic Kingdom plus EPCOT, or Universal Studios plus Islands of Adventure and a first taste of Epic Universe). Day 3 finishes that resort’s remaining gates and closes with a free evening at Disney Springs or CityWalk. Days 4-5 bring in the second resort, with SeaWorld/Aquatica or ICON Park’s 400-foot observation wheel as a lighter option between the two. Day 6 is a genuine non-park rest day. Day 7 forks: a Kennedy Space Center day trip (about an hour east, budget most of the day for it) or LEGOLAND Florida for families with younger kids. One more 2024 change worth knowing: standard date-based tickets no longer require a separate park reservation, only Annual Passholders and certain discounted ticket types still do.

Orlando is way more than the theme parks
Downtown Orlando and Lake Eola Park, with its swan paddleboats, sit a genuine car ride from the resort corridor but reward it: a walkable core, the Mills 50 district’s dense Vietnamese and pan-Asian food scene, and the artisan East End Market food hall. Winter Park, an upscale suburb just north, pairs oak-lined Park Avenue shopping with the Morse Museum’s Tiffany glass collection (Tuesday-Saturday 9:30am-4pm, Sunday 1-4pm, closed Mondays) and a one-hour Scenic Boat Tour across the Winter Park Chain of Lakes, running continuously since 1938 for $20 adult/$10 child. When to visit Orlando in 2026: weather, crowds, and hurricane season
Summer (June-September) is hot and humid with daily afternoon thunderstorms genuinely typical, a 50-70% chance most days, usually mid-afternoon, alongside heat index values commonly in the 100-107°F range; build an indoor backup into any midday plan. Hurricane season runs officially 1 June to 30 November, and the 2026 Atlantic outlook from NOAA and Colorado State called for a near-to-below-average season, though that forecast gets revised through the season and should not be treated as settled. Winter (December-February) brings the most comfortable weather and also the biggest crowds and prices, Christmas and New Year’s week especially.
