Best Places to Stay in Busan, Korea
Busan is hilly and spread out along the coast, so where you stay matters more here than in a compact city like Seoul. Pick by area and stay close to a metro line, rather than chasing a single hotel name.
Haeundae, the beach-first pick
Haeundae is Busan’s flagship beach-resort district: Korea’s most famous beach, a dense line of hotels along the boardwalk, and a lively nightlife scene. It’s the default choice if a beach stay is the priority, and it’s well connected by metro and the airport limousine bus.
Gwangalli, a hipper mid-range base
Gwangalli offers beach access with a quieter, cafe-and-bar feel than Haeundae, plus the best view in the city of the illuminated Gwangan Bridge at night. It’s a strong pick if you want the coast without Haeundae’s scale.
Seomyeon, the transit hub
Seomyeon is Busan’s central downtown, where Metro Lines 1 and 2 cross, dense with shopping, food, and nightlife. It’s the most metro-convenient base in the city, worth prioritizing if you’d rather minimize travel time between sights than wake up near a beach.
Nampo-dong, for the old downtown
Nampo-dong and Jungang-dong sit right next to Jagalchi Market and BIFF Square, atmospheric and central for sightseeing, though further from the beaches.
Busan Station, for rail arrivals
If you’re arriving or connecting by KTX, the Busan Station area (Choryang) is the most convenient base, adjacent to a foreigners’ shopping street known locally as “Texas Street.”
Book ahead if your dates fall near the Busan International Film Festival in October, when Haeundae and Nampo-dong hotels fill up fastest. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and a T-money card bought on arrival will get you from any of these areas to the rest of the city.
If you’re flying in or out early
Anyone with an early Gimhae International Airport flight might consider a first or last night closer to the western side of the city rather than Haeundae, since the airport bus and light rail both run faster from areas nearer the terminal than from the far eastern beach district. It’s a minor trade-off against a beach view, but it can save a genuinely early wake-up call on a departure morning.
