Three areas cover almost everyone’s needs in Izmir, and the right pick mostly comes down to whether you want nightlife, history, or quiet within reach.
Alsancak: the default first-time base
Central, walkable to the Kordon seafront promenade, and dense with restaurants, cafes, and the city’s main nightlife strip around 1453 Sokak, Alsancak is well connected by İZBAN and tram and is the right call if you want to walk everywhere and be near the best evening scene in the city. Most first-timers should start here.
Konak: history and the bazaar at your door
The old-town side, home to Kemeraltı Bazaar, Konak Square, and the Clock Tower, plus a major transit hub where the metro, tram, and a ferry pier all converge. Good for travelers prioritizing sightseeing and market browsing over evenings out; it’s a touch less polished after dark than Alsancak.
Karşıyaka: across the bay, better value
Reached by a short İZDENİZ ferry ride, Karşıyaka is more local and residential, with its own waterfront promenade and tram line. It’s arguably the best value-for-money base in the city, and the daily ferry commute into the center is a genuine plus rather than a downside, one of Izmir’s better small rituals.
The Kordon isn’t really its own neighborhood
You’ll see hotels marketed as “on the Kordon,” but the seafront strip technically runs through and alongside Alsancak and Konak rather than standing as a separate district. Treat it as a location descriptor, the promenade and the larger hotels along it, rather than a fourth area to weigh against the other three.
Named hotels worth knowing
Two well-documented properties anchor the upper end: the Swissôtel Büyük Efes İzmir (also referenced as the Swissôtel Grand Efes), a longstanding upscale landmark near the city center with Aegean views and a spa, and the Mövenpick Hotel İzmir, family-friendly and on or near the Kordon waterfront. Compare current rates for both on Booking.com . Beyond these two, look by area rather than a specific name, boutique hotels around Alsancak’s side streets or budget guesthouses near Konak, since the mid-range and budget tier changes too often to recommend a fixed list honestly.
So which area should you actually book?
Alsancak if this is your first visit and you want to walk to dinner and the Kordon without thinking about it. Konak if the bazaar and the Clock Tower matter more to you than evening options. Karşıyaka if you don’t mind a ferry ride and want a quieter, cheaper base with its own charm.

One concrete tip: if you book Karşıyaka, confirm your hotel is within walking distance of the Karşıyaka or Bostanlı ferry pier, not just “near the water,” since the bay’s shoreline is longer than it looks on a map.
