Where to Stay for Montreal Day Trips
If Montreal is your base for day trips, where you stay matters more than usual, proximity to Gare Centrale saves real time on early VIA Rail mornings. Here’s how to think about it by area, plus the one overnight option that lives out on the day trips themselves.
Downtown, near Gare Centrale
The Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth sits directly above Gare Centrale, about as convenient as it gets for an early Quebec City or Ottawa train. It’s also a piece of history, John Lennon and Yoko Ono held their 1969 “Bed-In for Peace” here, Suite 1742, and wrote “Give Peace a Chance” during the stay. Nearby in the Golden Square Mile, the Ritz-Carlton Montreal has operated since 1912, the first hotel anywhere to carry the Ritz-Carlton name.
Old Montreal
Walkable and atmospheric, the trade-off is a slightly longer trip to the train station on day-trip mornings. The Hôtel Nelligan and Hôtel William Gray are the two verified boutique options here, both put you inside cobblestone-street distance of the Notre-Dame Basilica and the Old Port.
Plateau and Mile End
Fewer big hotels, more short-term rentals and smaller properties, best for anyone prioritizing the local, lived-in neighborhoods over train-station convenience. Recommend by area rather than by name here, both the Plateau and Mile End put you close to the city’s bagel and smoked-meat crawl.
The one overnight built into a day trip
The Fairmont Château Montebello, a historic log château about 2 hours west near Parc Omega, is the named overnight option if you’re doing the Montebello day trip and would rather not drive the round trip in a single day. It’s the one hotel in this guide that isn’t in Montreal itself, worth booking directly if Parc Omega is on your list.
Booking notes
Quebec’s sales tax, 14.975%, is added to every room rate at checkout, factor it into a real budget. Hotel prices spike hard citywide during the F1 Canadian Grand Prix in late May and during the Jazz Festival and Just for Laughs in summer, book well ahead if your trip lands near any of those dates.
