Kyoto Travel & Cultural Etiquette Tips
Before You Go
- Research: Learn about Japanese culture, customs, and history to appreciate Kyoto’s heritage.
- Dress Modestly: Pack comfortable, modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees for temple visits.
Temple Etiquette
- Bow Upon Entry: Bow slightly upon entering a temple or shrine to show respect.
- Remove Your Shoes: Take off your shoes when required, and use the provided slippers or go barefoot.
- Dress Code: Avoid revealing clothing, especially at famous temples like Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji.
- No Photography Inside: Refrain from taking pictures inside temples and shrines, unless explicitly allowed.
On The Streets
- Walk on the Left: Pedestrians generally walk on the left side of the street, especially in busy areas.
- Bicycle Etiquette: Be mindful of Kyoto’s many bicycles; yield to them when walking, and ride on the left side of the road if you rent a bike.
- Respect Quiet Hours: Avoid loud conversations or noise after 10 PM, as noise pollution is considered impolite.
Dining & Shopping
- Table Manners:
- Wait for the host to start eating before you begin.
- Try a little of each dish to show appreciation.
- Don’t leave your chopsticks standing upright in your rice bowl (this is reminiscent of a funeral ritual).
- Pay Respectfully: When shopping, it’s customary to use both hands when giving or receiving something, as a sign of respect.
- No Tipping: Tipping is not expected or widely practiced in Japan.
General Etiquette
- Bowing: A bow is a significant gesture in Japanese culture. Learn the proper way to bow (e.g., 15-20 degrees for casual encounters).
- Gift-Giving: When giving gifts, nicely wrap them and refuse a gift once or twice before accepting it.
- Respect for Elders: Show respect to elderly locals, especially in traditional settings.
Additional Tips
- Learn Basic Japanese Phrases: Greet locals with “konnichiwa” (hello), “arigatou” (thank you), and “sumimasen” (excuse me).
- Carry Cash: Many places in Kyoto still don’t accept credit cards, so have some cash handy.
- Stay Hydrated: Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated and reduce waste.
