Addis Ababa Ethiopia 4 Day Itinerary

Travel advisory: Ethiopia is in an active conflict, with fighting in the north resumed in late September 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions, and the US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). Check the current UK FCDO and US State Department advice before you book and again before you fly. Addis Ababa itself is not in the FCDO’s advise-against list, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, crime hotspots including Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto, and security checkpoints. This guide covers Addis Ababa and the Bishoftu corridor only; the northern historic sites are not currently visitable.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1: History and Culture

Morning

  • National Museum of Ethiopia: Start your day by visiting the National Museum, which showcases the country’s rich history and culture.
  • Ethnological Museum: After visiting the national museum, head to the Ethnological Museum, located in the same compound, to learn about Ethiopia’s diverse ethnic groups.

Afternoon

  • Holy Trinity Cathedral: Visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the most important Orthodox churches in Ethiopia.
  • Taitu Street: Take a stroll along Taitu Street, a bustling area filled with cafes, restaurants, and shops.

Evening

  • Dine at Yod Abyssinia: Enjoy traditional Ethiopian cuisine at Yod Abyssinia, known for its delicious injera (flatbread) and wats (stews).
  • Stay at: Taitu Hotel or Addis Regency Hotel, both located in the heart of Addis Ababa.

Things to Know

  • Be prepared for crowds and long lines at popular attractions.
  • Dress modestly when visiting churches and museums.
  • Try to avoid traveling during rush hour (7:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm) to minimize traffic congestion.

Day 2: Nature and Entertainment

Morning

  • Entoto Hill: Drive up Entoto Hill for views of Addis Ababa. The FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot, so go by car in daytime and in company.
  • Bihere Tsige: Visit the Bihere Tsige (Mount Viewpoint) for panoramic views of the city.

Afternoon

  • Addis Ababa Zoo: Spend the afternoon exploring the Addis Ababa Zoo, home to various African animals.
  • Cinema Ethiopia: Catch a movie at Cinema Ethiopia, one of the oldest cinemas in Africa.

Evening

  • Dine at Gusto Ristorante: Treat yourself to Italian cuisine at Gusto Ristorante.
  • Enjoy live music at Jazzamba Lounge: End your day with some smooth jazz tunes at Jazzamba Lounge.

Day 3: Markets and Shopping

Morning

  • ** Merkato Market**: Explore the largest open-air market in Africa, Merkato Market, in daytime with a guide and minimal valuables. Pickpocketing is common, so avoid it after dark. Be prepared to haggle!
  • Shiromeda Market: Visit Shiromeda Market for a variety of traditional Ethiopian clothing and souvenirs.

Afternoon

  • Piassa Shopping Area: Take a stroll through the Piassa Shopping Area, known for its modern shops and cafes.
  • National Palace: Catch a glimpse of the National Palace, the official residence of the President of Ethiopia. (from outside only)

Evening

  • Dine at 2000 Habesha: Savor traditional Ethiopian cuisine at 2000 Habesha.
  • Stay at: Hotel Harmony or Addis View Hotel, both offering comfortable accommodations.

Tips

  • Be prepared to bargain when shopping at markets.
  • Do not travel alone at night; go door to door by car.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.

Day 4: Day Trip to Bishoftu

Morning

  • Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) crater lakes: Drive about 48 to 62 km southeast on the Addis-Adama Expressway, about 1 to 1.5 hours each way.
  • Lake Hora: Take a boat on the lake and enjoy the bird life.

Afternoon

  • Kuriftu Resort & Spa: Have a lakeside lunch at the resort.
  • Return to Addis Ababa: Head back before dark, staying on the expressway corridor and not travelling on to Adama or Awash.

Transportation

  • Use hotel transfers or yellow or app-based taxis, such as Ride or ZayRide.
  • Negotiate prices before starting your journey.
  • Consider hiring a private car and driver for the day trip.
  • The UK FCDO warns of a high terrorism threat and crime hotspots including Bole Medhanealem, Meskel Square and Entoto. Debre Libanos monastery and the Blue Nile Gorge lie in areas where the FCDO advises against all travel, so they are not part of this itinerary.
