Travel advisory: Ethiopia is in an active conflict, with fighting in the north resumed in late September 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions, and the US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). Check the current UK FCDO and US State Department advice before you book and again before you fly. Addis Ababa itself is not in the FCDO’s advise-against list, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, crime hotspots including Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto, and security checkpoints. This guide covers Addis Ababa and the Bishoftu corridor only; the northern historic sites are not currently visitable.

Day 1: Arrival and Acclimatization

Morning

  • Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD)
  • Take a hotel transfer or a yellow or app-based taxi to your hotel in the city center (about 30 to 40 minutes)

Afternoon

  • Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia to learn about Ethiopian history and culture
  • Explore the nearby Tiglachin Monument, a symbol of Ethiopian independence

Evening

  • Dine at 2000 Habesha, a traditional Ethiopian restaurant serving injera (flatbread) with various stews
  • Stay overnight at Hotel Lobelia or similar, a comfortable mid-range hotel in the city center

Things to Know

  • Addis Ababa is at high altitude (2,350m/7,700ft), so take it easy on your first day and stay hydrated
  • Learn some basic Amharic phrases, such as “hello” (selam) and “thank you” (amesegenalehu)

Transportation

  • Use hotel transfers or yellow or app-based taxis rather than blue-and-white ones, and negotiate the fare beforehand
  • Local buses (minivans) are a cheap option, but can be crowded and confusing for tourists

Day 2: History and Culture

Morning

  • Drive up Entoto Hill for panoramic views of Addis Ababa; the FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot, so go by car in daytime and in company
  • Stop by the St. George Cathedral, a beautiful Orthodox church built in 1896

Afternoon

  • Visit the ** Merkato** , one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, in daytime with a guide and minimal valuables (be prepared for crowds and haggling; pickpocketing is common, so avoid it after dark)
  • Visit the Ethnological Museum to learn about Ethiopia’s diverse ethnic groups

Evening

  • Enjoy traditional Ethiopian coffee at a local café
  • Stay overnight at Hotel Lobelia or similar

Tips

  • Be prepared for crowds and chaos at Merkato, and consider hiring a guide
  • Respect local customs and dress modestly when visiting churches and cultural institutions

Day 3: Day Trip to Bishoftu

Morning

  • Hire a car and driver for the drive of about 48 to 62 km southeast on the Addis-Adama Expressway to the Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) crater lakes, about 1 to 1.5 hours each way
  • Take a boat on Lake Hora

Afternoon

  • Have lunch at the Kuriftu Resort & Spa by the lake
  • Return to Addis Ababa before dark; stay on the expressway corridor and do not travel on to Adama or Awash

  • Try some traditional Ethiopian food at a lakeside restaurant in Bishoftu

Day 4: Modern Addis Ababa

Morning

  • Visit the Addis Ababa University, one of Africa’s oldest and most prestigious institutions
  • Explore the nearby Piassa, a historic neighborhood with European-style architecture

Afternoon

  • Stop by the Addis Mercato Mall, a modern shopping center with international brands and restaurants
  • Relax at Yeka Mount Entoto Park, a peaceful green space with great city views

Evening

  • Dine at Gusto Ristorante, an Italian restaurant with a cozy atmosphere
  • Stay overnight at Hotel Lobelia or similar

Things to Know

  • Addis Ababa is rapidly modernizing, but still maintains its unique cultural identity
  • Be prepared for traffic congestion and construction delays in the city
  • The UK FCDO warns of a high terrorism threat, crime hotspots including Bole Medhanealem, Meskel Square and Entoto, and security checkpoints. Travel door to door by car after dark
  • Debre Libanos monastery lies on the A3 in North Shewa, where the UK FCDO advises against all travel, so it is not a day-trip option

Day 5: Nature and Relaxation

Morning

  • Visit the Addis Ababa Botanical Garden, a quiet green space in the city; Menagesha Suba forest, about 40 km away in the Finfine special zone, lies beside West Shewa and the A4 corridor that the FCDO flags, so check the current advisory and ask a licensed operator before you go
  • Spend the rest of the morning in the city at a cafe

Afternoon

  • Relax at Kuriftu Resort, a luxurious spa and resort with stunning views of the surrounding hills
  • Enjoy a coffee or cocktail by the poolside

Evening

  • Stay overnight at Kuriftu Resort or similar, for a relaxing getaway from the city

Day 6: Departure

Morning

  • Spend some time shopping for souvenirs or exploring a local market
  • Depart for the airport (about 30 to 40 minutes) and fly back home

  • Leave some extra time for security checks and possible flight delays
  • Exchange any remaining Ethiopian birr (ETB) for your next destination or keep as a souvenir; the rate in October 2026 is about 160 to 165 birr to the US dollar
