6 Days in Albania: The First-Timer Itinerary
Six days means Saranda and Ksamil finally get more than a rushed afternoon: Tirana, Berat, Gjirokaster, then two full nights on the coast with Butrint, the Blue Eye, and Ksamil’s islands spread across separate days instead of crammed into one. Pay in LEK, keep cash for the Blue Eye’s 50-LEK entry and Butrint’s 1,000-LEK ticket, fly into TIA, and rent a car (roughly EUR 10-25/day off-peak) since this loop covers close to 500km round trip.

Day 1: Tirana Base
- Morning: land at TIA, pick up your rental car or take the Rinas Express shuttle into Skanderbeg Square, roughly 300 LEK (about EUR 3; schedule on TIA’s transport page )
- Afternoon: Bunk’Art 2 (900-1,000 LEK with audio guide), then the free square itself
- Evening: dinner in Blloku, the former communist-elite quarter opened to ordinary Albanians only after 1991
Day 2: Tirana To Berat
- Morning: drive to Berat, roughly 2-2.5 hours
- Afternoon: Mangalem and Gorica quarters across the Osum River, UNESCO-listed since 2008; the general castle fee is waived in 2026, the Onufri Museum still runs 400-500 LEK
- Evening: overnight in Berat, tave kosi for dinner (roughly 600-900 LEK)
Day 3: Berat To Gjirokaster
- Morning: drive to Gjirokaster, roughly 2.5 hours
- Afternoon: the UNESCO stone old town beneath its castle; entry roughly 400 LEK, plus 200 LEK for the Cold War bunker and 200 LEK for the weapons museum
- Evening: overnight in Gjirokaster
Day 4: Gjirokaster To Saranda And Butrint
- Morning: drive to Saranda/Ksamil, roughly 55 minutes to 1h20
- Afternoon: Butrint , the UNESCO Greek/Roman/Venetian ruins on a coastal lagoon roughly 20km south, entry 1,000 LEK (about EUR 10), open 08:30-20:00 with last entry at 18:00 through October
- Evening: overnight in Saranda or Ksamil, seafood dinner, roughly EUR 20-40
Is the Blue Eye worth the detour? Yes, and it barely costs anything: entry is 50 LEK (about EUR 0.50), cash only, plus 100-200 LEK parking. The real cost is the roughly 22km detour via Muzine, not the ticket. Swimming rules in the spring itself have been restricted in places, so check current signage on arrival rather than assuming.
Day 5: Blue Eye And Ksamil Islands
- Morning: the Blue Eye, roughly 22km from Saranda via Muzine, 08:00-20:00
- Afternoon: Ksamil’s islets, a boat tour around them runs roughly EUR 16-25/person for an hour; expect real crowds here in July-August, it’s Albania’s most photographed and most overtouristed coastal stop
- Evening: second night in Saranda or Ksamil
Should I book Butrint tickets in advance? No, walk-up tickets are standard and the site rarely sells out. Where advance booking matters is a guided Butrint day tour if you want the history explained on-site, and the Blue Eye/Ksamil boat combo in peak July-August, when good operators fill up.
Day 6: Back To Tirana
- Morning: drive straight back to Tirana, roughly 4 hours
- Afternoon: return the rental car, last-minute shopping in Skanderbeg Square
- Evening: depart from TIA
Six days is enough for the full interior-plus-coast loop without rushing any single stop. The Riviera towns north of Saranda, Dhermi and Himare, and the Llogara Pass drive are the one thing still missing; add a 7th day and they’re in reach.
