5 Days in Amritsar: First-Timer Itinerary

Day 1: The Golden Temple

Day 2: Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum

Afternoon

Visit the Partition Museum, ticketed entry (verify current price), for the 1947 Partition told through survivor accounts across fourteen galleries.

Evening

Shop Hall Bazaar, bargaining expected, then dinner at an old-city dhaba.

One concrete tip for day two: budget real time at the Partition Museum specifically, it rewards more than a rushed hour.

Day 3: Gobindgarh Fort and Wagah-Attari

Morning

Visit Durgiana Temple, free entry, then Gobindgarh Fort, ticketed entry (verify current price), for its 7D show and Toshakhana coin museum.

Afternoon

Head roughly 28-32km west to Wagah-Attari for the late-afternoon ceremony, arriving at least an hour early. Check its current status first, since current guidance advises against travel within 10km of the border and describes the crossing as closed.

Evening

Dinner back in Amritsar; swap in a second old-city pass if Wagah isn’t running.

One concrete tip for day three: settle the Wagah question by lunchtime, not at the gate.

Day 4: Tarn Taran Sahib

Morning

Head roughly 25km south to Tarn Taran Sahib, its own sacred sarovar and gurdwara, drawing a fraction of the Golden Temple’s crowds.

Afternoon

Return to Amritsar and visit Ram Bagh, small entry fee (verify), Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s 1819-31 garden and palace museum.

Evening

A relaxed dinner, and a walk through the old city food lanes for Amritsari kulcha and Amritsari fish.

One concrete tip for day four: pair Tarn Taran Sahib with Ram Bagh rather than a full second temple visit, the pacing works better as a change of register.

Day 5: Harike Wetland

Morning

Head roughly 60km southwest to Harike Wetland, at the confluence of the Sutlej and Beas rivers, for boat rides and birdwatching; verify current boat and entry arrangements locally before you go.

Afternoon

Return to Amritsar for a slow final afternoon: last-minute shopping at Kapra market for phulkari textiles, bargaining expected.

Evening

A farewell dinner and a final Golden Temple visit before departure. A taxi or auto to ATQ airport or Amritsar Junction runs roughly ₹300-550 (verify).

One concrete tip for day five: don’t schedule Harike Wetland on your departure day itself, the round trip plus the city drive back leaves little margin if traffic runs long.
