6 Days in Amritsar: First-Timer Itinerary

Six days gives you a genuinely slow Amritsar trip: the full holy-city core, both day trips from the 5-day version, and a third, quieter countryside day at Sri Ram Tirath. See the 5-day itinerary if two day trips is enough.

Day 1: The Golden Temple

Morning

Day 3: Gobindgarh Fort and Wagah-Attari

Morning

Visit Durgiana Temple, free entry, then Gobindgarh Fort, ticketed entry (verify current price), for the 7D show and Toshakhana coin museum.

Afternoon

Head roughly 28-32km west to Wagah-Attari, arriving at least an hour before the late-afternoon ceremony. Check its current status first, since current guidance advises against travel within 10km of the border and describes the crossing as closed.

Evening

Dinner back in Amritsar; swap in a second old-city pass if Wagah isn’t running.

One concrete tip for day three: settle the Wagah question by lunchtime, not at the gate.

Day 4: Tarn Taran Sahib and Ram Bagh

Morning

Head roughly 25km south to Tarn Taran Sahib, its own sacred sarovar and gurdwara.

Afternoon

Return to Amritsar and visit Ram Bagh, small entry fee, the 1819-31 garden and palace museum.

Evening

Dinner and a walk through the old city’s food lanes for Amritsari kulcha and Amritsari fish.

One concrete tip for day four: pair these two as a lighter day between the two border-area trips on either side of it.

Day 5: Harike Wetland

Morning

Head roughly 60km southwest to Harike Wetland for boat rides and birdwatching; verify current boat and entry arrangements locally.

Afternoon

Return to Amritsar for the Kapra market, phulkari textiles, bargaining expected.

Evening

A relaxed dinner, no fixed plan required.

One concrete tip for day five: bring binoculars if birdwatching genuinely interests you, rental options at the wetland itself aren’t reliable.

Day 6: Sri Ram Tirath

Morning

Head out to Sri Ram Tirath, traditionally associated with the sage Valmiki’s ashram and, in Hindu tradition, the birthplace of Lava and Kusha; verify current opening details and exact distance before you go, as these weren’t independently confirmed here.

Afternoon

Return to Amritsar for a final slow pass through the old city, revisiting anything the earlier days didn’t fit, the three sacred Ber trees inside the Golden Temple complex, the Darshani Deori archway, or a last stop at Ram Bagh.

Evening

A farewell dinner and a final Golden Temple visit before departure. A taxi or auto to ATQ airport or Amritsar Junction runs roughly ₹300-550.

One concrete tip for day six: treat this as the buffer day it effectively is, keep it flexible enough to absorb anything that ran long earlier in the week.
