4 Days in Austria: The First-Timer Itinerary

Four days is where Austria stops being a Vienna trip and starts being a country trip. This route keeps the 3-day plan’s Vienna-and-Wachau spine, then adds Salzburg as a real overnight, not a rushed day trip, a 2h22 Railjet ride away. Day 1: Vienna, Where Every Austria Trip Starts

Morning

Land at Vienna International Airport, S7 train to Wien Mitte, about 25 minutes for EUR5.40. Check in near Wien Westbahnhof (tomorrow’s Melk train and day 4’s Salzburg Railjet both leave from a Vienna hub, so a central base pays off all week). Head for the Hofburg: EUR20 Sisi Museum ticket or the free courtyards.

Afternoon

St Stephen’s Cathedral (free nave, EUR8 for the South Tower), then Graben, Kohlmarkt, and a Ringstrasse loop past the Staatsoper, Rathaus, and Parliament.

Evening

Melange at Cafe Central, dinner at a Beisl tavern, EUR15-25 a main.

Day 2: Schonbrunn Palace and the Upper Belvedere

Morning

U4 to Schonbrunn, timed slot from schoenbrunn.at . State Apartments EUR30, Palace Ticket EUR42, Classic Pass EUR49 with the Gloriette hill and Privy Garden.

Afternoon

Upper Belvedere for Klimt’s The Kiss, which hangs there, not in the Albertina.

Evening

Naschmarkt dinner, then an early night before tomorrow’s Wachau train.

Day 3: The Wachau Valley and Melk Abbey

Morning

Direct regional train from Wien Westbahnhof to Melk, about an hour. Stift Melk , a working Benedictine abbey since 1089: EUR16 self-guided, EUR20 with a guided tour, EUR32 family, EUR5.50 for the abbey park alone.

Afternoon

Seasonal Krems-Melk river boat back if it’s running (check ddsg-blue-danube.at , gaps exist spring and autumn 2026), or a vineyard walk above Durnstein and a heuriger stop for Gruner Veltliner, the valley’s signature grape.

Evening

Train back to Vienna. Pack tonight; tomorrow’s a travel day.

Should You Do Salzburg as a Day Trip or an Overnight?

An overnight, every time, once you have four days to work with. A same-day Vienna-Salzburg round trip eats close to 5 hours on trains alone and leaves you rushing Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Altstadt in a single afternoon. One night in Salzburg turns the same city into a relaxed evening walk, a proper fortress visit, and breakfast in the old town before heading back.

Day 4: Onward to Salzburg by Rail

Morning

Railjet from Wien Hauptbahnhof to Salzburg: the fastest RJX services run 2h22 to 2h25, twice an hour, with Sparschiene advance fares from EUR19.90 booked ahead on oebb.at (flexible walk-up fares run closer to EUR65). Drop bags at your Altstadt hotel and start walking.

Afternoon

Ride the Festungsbahn funicular, a 54-second climb, up to Hohensalzburg Fortress , one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval fortresses. The Basic Fortress Card with funicular is EUR15.50, the All-Inclusive version EUR19.20 and worth the extra few euros for the museum rooms inside.

Evening

Walk Getreidegasse for Mozart’s birthplace at No. 9, then dinner in the Altstadt. Visiting between 17 July and 30 August 2026 puts you inside the Salzburg Festival window, so book hotel and dinner reservations further ahead than usual.
