6 Days in Cairo: First-Timer Plan

Travel advisory: Egypt sits on the edge of the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The country is not a combatant, and Cairo, Giza, and the Nile Valley remain the normal, actively-visited tourist core, with 2026 tourism hitting record numbers. There has been limited spillover, including a July 2026 drone strike on ships at Damietta port in the north, far from any tourist site. At the time of writing the US State Department lists Egypt at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), with “Do Not Travel” limited to the Sinai interior and the remote Western Desert, not the places in this guide. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, since the situation is fluid.
Six days takes the 5-day plan (Giza, GEM, Islamic and Coptic Cairo, the Egyptian Museum, Al-Azhar Park, the City of the Dead) and adds a sixth, slower day for the corners the first five rush past. Day 1: Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum
Morning
The Giza Plateau via the new south-side Visitors Center and free shuttle (about 700 EGP, about $14, verify).
Afternoon
The Grand Egyptian Museum, fully open since November 2025 (about 1,450 EGP, about $30; book at tickets.gem.eg).
Evening
A sunset felucca ride on the Nile.
Day 2: Islamic Cairo Core
Morning
The Citadel of Saladin and Muhammad Ali Mosque, then Al-Azhar Mosque.
Afternoon
Khan el-Khalili bazaar and mint tea at El Fishawy Café, open since 1797.
Evening
Dinner near Al-Muizz Street.
Day 3: Coptic Cairo, NMEC, and the Egyptian Museum
Morning
Coptic Cairo: the Hanging Church, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Coptic Museum.
Afternoon
NMEC in Fustat (about 550 EGP; no photography inside), then the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
Evening
Dinner in Garden City.
Day 4: Al-Azhar Park, Cairo Tower, and Zamalek
Morning
Al-Azhar Park and Bab Zuweila.
Afternoon
Cairo Tower and a walk through Zamalek.
Evening
A Nile dinner cruise with a Tanoura or belly-dance show.
Day 5: Sultan Hassan and the City of the Dead
Morning
Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i mosques, sharing a combined ticket (about 220 EGP).
Afternoon
A respectful, guided visit to the City of the Dead, a living, inhabited neighborhood, not a ruin to wander alone.
Evening
Al-Muizz Street lit up after dark.
Day 6: A Slower Last Day
Morning
Go back to Khan el-Khalili with no fixed schedule, this time to actually haggle for spices, brass, and souvenirs rather than just look.
Afternoon
A relaxed walk along the Nile Corniche, ahwa and karkade at a traditional coffeehouse, and any site the first five days didn’t fit, whether that’s a second look at the Egyptian Museum or Al-Azhar Mosque at prayer time.
Evening
A farewell dinner in Zamalek, with koshari at Abou Tarek one last time if it’s become the trip’s running favorite.
Getting Around and Where to Stay
Uber and Careem both work well in Cairo across all six days; the Metro’s Line 3 also reaches the airport. Zamalek stays the simplest base, though Cairo’s notorious traffic means cross-town days take longer than the map suggests.
One concrete tip: use day six’s flexibility to rebook anything that sold out earlier in the week, GEM slots especially, rather than trying to force a new site into an already tight schedule.
