7 Days from Chiang Mai: Day Trip Itinerary
Seven days from Chiang Mai runs the complete gateway list, Doi Inthanon, an ethical elephant sanctuary, a waterfall-and-trek day, Chiang Rai’s White Temple, two nights in Pai, then closes with a genuine rest day back in Chiang Mai before you fly out. This is the version with no rushed days anywhere in it.

Day 1: Doi Inthanon National Park
Leave by 7:30am, guided tour (1,200 to 2,000 THB) or Grab charter, for the 80km, 1.5 to 2 hour drive south. Entrance is 300 THB adult, 150 THB kids 3 to 14, plus a 30 THB car or 20 THB motorbike vehicle fee. Wachirathan Falls, the Twin Royal Pagodas (100 THB extra), and the summit boardwalk at 2,565m, official trail details here , fill the day. Bring a layer, it’s cool at the top.
Day 2: An Ethical Elephant Sanctuary
Elephant Nature Park, about 60km and 1 to 1.5 hours northwest in Mae Taeng district, runs an observation-only full-day visit for roughly 3,500 THB (kids 3-11 half price), 7:30 to 8am pickup, 4:30 to 5pm return, vegetarian lunch included. Feed from a platform, watch elephants roam and bathe, no riding, the park’s site has current dates. Riding is linked to documented spinal and foot injuries in captive elephants, treat the no-riding rule as non-negotiable, not a preference.
Day 3: Sticky Waterfalls and a Hill-Tribe Village
Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls, same district as the elephant park, about 60km and 1 to 1.5 hours out, is free and open 8am to 5pm. Climb the grippy limestone barefoot in the morning, then spend the afternoon on a responsible hill-tribe trek, choosing an operator who can explain how the visit benefits the community over a pure photo-op village stop.
Day 4: Chiang Rai and the White Temple
Depart by 7am for the 180km, 3 to 3.5 (sometimes 4) hour drive. Wat Rong Khun’s foreigner entrance doubled to 200 THB on January 1, 2026, open 8am to 6pm, shoulders and knees covered. Leave Chiang Rai by 3pm, a round trip here is 6 to 7 hours of driving for 3 to 4 hours of sightseeing, a genuine long day even with a full week to spread things across.
Day 5: The Drive to Pai
Minivans leave Chiang Mai as early as 6:30am, 3 to 4 hours over Route 1095’s 762 curves, landing in Pai around 10 to 10:30am, front seat recommended for motion sickness. That leaves a full afternoon and evening: Pai Canyon at sunset, then Pai Walking Street’s night market for dinner. Overnight in Pai.
Day 6: Pai in Full, Then the Return Drive
Morning at Tha Pai Hot Springs or Mo Paeng Waterfall, then the Land Split and coffee along the canal road before lunch. Depart Pai by 1 to 2pm for the 3 to 4 hour drive back, landing in Chiang Mai by early evening. Agencies discourage driving this road after dark, don’t push a later departure for one more stop.
Day 7: Flex Day in Chiang Mai and Departure
What should you actually do on a flex day after six days of day trips? Nothing that requires another early alarm. Sleep in, then handle whatever the week’s schedule squeezed out, a cooking class, a slower Nimman coffee crawl, or a first proper look at the Old City if you spent the week chasing gateways instead. Head to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in the afternoon or evening, it’s only about 3 to 6km from the Old City, 15 to 25 minutes and 80 to 200 THB by Grab.

Getting Around and What to Know
Tours through Day 4 collect from your Chiang Mai hotel, keep your base in the Old City or Nimman for simple mornings and an easy airport run at the end. Grab and the red songthaew cover in-town gaps; carry small bills for songthaews and market stalls. Book Pai lodging for both nights before you leave Chiang Mai. Don’t fill Day 7 with a new day trip just because you technically have the hours for it. Everything on this list, Doi Inthanon, the elephant sanctuary, Chiang Rai, and Pai, deserves the attention it already got earlier in the week, not a rushed rerun on your last day.
