2 Days: Chicago and Downstate
Two days is enough to use Chicago as a home base and still get a genuine taste of Illinois beyond the Loop: one day in the city itself, one day out to Oak Park for Frank Lloyd Wright. Need more time for Starved Rock or the downstate Route 66 run? See the 3-day through 7-day versions of this same route.

Day 1: Chicago Home Base

- Walk the free Riverwalk toward the Michigan Avenue Bridge
Afternoon (12:00 pm - 5:00 pm)
- Lunch at Portillo’s for a Chicago-style hot dog or an Italian beef sandwich, $8-13
- Ride the Chicago Architecture Center river cruise, 90 minutes covering 50-plus buildings along the river, this is the best orientation to the city there is and worth booking ahead in summer
Evening (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm)
- Dinner at Lou Malnati’s for the deep-dish experience, a medium runs $24-30 and feeds two or three
- Settle into your hotel early, tomorrow’s Oak Park morning starts on the earlier side
Day 2: Oak Park and a Downtown Evening
Morning (9:00 am - 1:00 pm)
- Take the Green Line’s Harlem/Lake branch or the Blue Line’s Forest Park branch to Oak Park, 20-25 minutes from the Loop
- Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, about $25 guided, or add the Inside and Out combo audio walk through the historic district for about $36, confirm current tour times at flwright.org
- Grab lunch in Oak Park before heading back downtown
Afternoon (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm)
- Back in the Loop, spend the afternoon at the Art Institute of Chicago, $32 adult, or the Willis Tower Skydeck, from $32, both run timed entry and sell out weekend slots
- If it’s a Third or Summer Thursday, hold off on the Art Institute until evening instead, see Things to Know below
Evening (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm)
- Dinner at Girl & the Goat in the West Loop or somewhere closer to your hotel
- If you timed it right, use the Art Institute’s Illinois-resident evening window instead of a paid afternoon ticket
Where to Stay
The Loop or River North puts you within walking distance of Millennium Park and a short CTA ride from Oak Park in both directions. Check current rates on Booking.com before locking in a neighborhood.
Getting Around
CTA rail runs $2.75 a ride, bus $2.50, tap a Ventra card, the Ventra app, or any contactless card or phone. A 1-Day pass is $6, current as of the February 2026 fare restructuring; the 3-Day pass no longer exists. Confirm current fares at transitchicago.com .
Do You Need a Car for This Trip?
No. Oak Park is a straightforward CTA ride, and everything else on this two-day plan sits inside the city. A car only earns its cost once Starved Rock or the downstate Route 66 run enters the picture on the longer versions of this itinerary.
Things to Know
The Art Institute’s Illinois-resident free window is evening-only, Third and Summer Thursdays 5-8pm, not a blanket free day for anyone, confirm the current schedule at artic.edu . Book the Frank Lloyd Wright tour a few days ahead of a weekend visit; Saturday and Sunday slots go first.
Confirm your Oak Park tour time and the river cruise departure the night before. Two days leaves no slack to absorb a resold-out slot.
