4 Days in Djerba: The First-Timer Itinerary

Four days takes the 3-day plan ’s cultural core and adds the island’s best mainland day trip: Matmata and Tataouine, the troglodyte homes and fortified ksour that anchor the desert side of a Djerba stay. It’s the first itinerary length where the mainland genuinely earns a full day. With less time, drop day four and use the 3-day plan; with more, the 5-day and 6-day plans add rest days around this same spine.
Book these before you go

Day 1: Houmt Souk and a first beach
Morning
Houmt Souk’s souks, fondouks, and the working fish auction, plus the Borj el-Kebir / Ghazi Mustapha Tower (around 8 TND).
Afternoon
A beach block at Sidi Mahrès or Aghir.
Evening
Dinner in Houmt Souk, and exchange dinars for the days ahead.
Day 2: El Ghriba, Djerbahood, and Guellala
Morning
El Ghriba Synagogue in Erriadh, a living house of worship, so dress modestly; Djerbahood’s free open-air murals (300+ since 2014) right next door.
Afternoon
Guellala’s pottery village and museum (around 10 TND).
Evening
An early night; day four starts early for the mainland.
Day 3: Beach, Djerba Explore Park, and Midoun
Morning
A slower beach morning.
Afternoon
Djerba Explore Park in Midoun (Lalla Hadria Museum, heritage village, crocodile farm, feeding 5pm; around 20 TND combined), or the Ras Rmel flamingo boat trip if it’s November-March. Fold in Midoun’s Friday market if the timing lines up.
Evening
Dinner in Midoun, then back to your hotel; you’ll want the sleep before the mainland day.
Day 4: Matmata and Tataouine
Morning
Cross the El Kantara causeway or the Ajim-Jorf ferry for the mainland, and head to Matmata to see the troglodyte cave homes, including Hotel Sidi Driss, used for the interior of Luke Skywalker’s home in the original Star Wars film. This is a mainland location, not something you’ll find on Djerba itself.
Afternoon
Continue to Tataouine and Ksar Ouled Soltane, the fortified granaries (ksour) that inspired the name “Tatooine,” often paired with the hilltop Berber villages of Chenini or Douiret on the same loop. Budget around 11 hours round trip from Djerba.
Evening
Return to Djerba in the evening; a simple dinner near your hotel is enough after a long day out.
Getting around and where to stay
Rent a car for the island days and either self-drive or book a guided day trip for Matmata/Tataouine, since it’s a long loop and a guide handles the mainland roads and border-adjacent stretches better than a rental on your own. Stay in Houmt Souk for souks-and-restaurants convenience, or the Zone Touristique for the beach block.
One concrete tip: carry cash before day four. ATMs thin out fast once you’re inland and off the island’s resort strip, and Matmata and Tataouine are exactly the kind of stop where a card won’t help. And the dinar is a closed currency: exchange on arrival, and keep your receipts to convert anything back before you fly home.
