7 Days in Doha: First-Timer Plan

Travel advisory: As of August 2026, Qatar is affected by the wider regional conflict with Iran. Earlier in the year the country took direct fire, with missiles and drones hitting sites in Qatar, including near Doha’s main airport, and Al Udeid Air Base outside the city was struck; one civilian was killed over the campaign. A ceasefire has been on and off since, Qatar’s tourism sector is open and recovering, and flights are operating through controlled corridors, but international aviation bodies still restricted Gulf overflight into late August and the situation stays fluid. The US State Department has Qatar at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel.” Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, and again before you fly, and expect possible flight disruption. Everything below is written for a normal visit, for when it’s calm.

Seven days takes the 6-day plan (the city core, The Pearl, Lusail, the Inland Sea, Al Zubarah, Purple Island, Zekreet, and Sheikh Faisal) and adds a final day for Aspire Park and more time on the beach and at dinner. Book these before you go

Day 1: Doha’s Core

Morning

Corniche walk, then the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) (~QR 100/$27, closed Wednesday, verify), plus the free MIA Park.

Afternoon

Souq Waqif, free, with the Falcon Souq and Gold Souq.

Evening

Dinner in Souq Waqif: machboos or harees, karak chai, shisha.

Day 2: Museums and Msheireb

Morning

National Museum of Qatar (~QR 50/$14, closed Tuesday, verify), Jean Nouvel’s “desert rose” building.

Afternoon

Msheireb Downtown and the free Msheireb Museums, including Bin Jelmood House.

Evening

Katara Cultural Village (free) or a dhow cruise on the Corniche (~QR 30, verify).

Day 3: The Pearl and Lusail

Morning

The Pearl-Qatar: Porto Arabia marina and the Qanat Quartier canals.

Afternoon

Lusail: Lusail Boulevard, Place Vendôme, and Lusail Stadium, the 2022 World Cup final venue (Stadium 974, from the 2022 tournament, is still standing elsewhere in Doha too).

Evening

Education City and the free Qatar National Library, or dinner along the Lusail Marina.

Day 4: Inland Sea Desert Safari

Morning

Guided 4x4 tour to the Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid), 45 minutes to an hour south (UNESCO tentative list, not a full site; no paved road in).

Afternoon

Dune bashing and a stop where the desert meets the Gulf; full-day tours usually include lunch.

Evening

Return to Doha and keep it simple: West Bay or Souq Waqif.

Day 5: North to Al Zubarah and Purple Island

Morning

Drive north (about 45 minutes to an hour) to Purple Island for mangrove kayaking; an ordinary rental car is fine.

Afternoon

Continue to Al Zubarah Fort, roughly 1.5 hours from Doha, Qatar’s only full UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Evening

Head back to Doha for dinner.

Day 6: West to Zekreet and Sheikh Faisal

Morning

Drive west (about an hour) to the Zekreet Peninsula: the abandoned Film City set and Richard Serra’s 1km steel sculpture.

Afternoon

Stop at the Sheikh Faisal Museum (about 40 minutes west of Doha) on the way back, a large private curiosities collection.

Evening

Dinner back in Doha, Souq Waqif or West Bay.

Day 7: Aspire Park and Wind-Down

Morning

Aspire Park, a large green space with lakes and walking trails, plus The Torch tower’s observation deck for a last skyline view over the city.

Afternoon

Slow down: beach time at Katara or your hotel, last-minute souvenir shopping in Souq Waqif, or a return visit to whichever museum you rushed on an earlier day.

Evening

A final dinner somewhere you’ve already decided you liked best this trip, before an early flight the next morning.

One concrete tip: leave day 7 loosely planned rather than booking it solid. By this point you’ll know which sight from days 1-3 deserves a longer second visit, and an open afternoon is the easiest way to give it one.
