7 Days in Dresden: First-Timer Plan
Heads up: some links here are affiliate links. Book or buy through them and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only point you to things we would actually use.
Seven days is Dresden plus a full regional tour: four days on the city and Elbe, then three straight day trips: Saxon Switzerland, Meissen and Moritzburg together, and a full day in Leipzig. Honestly, Dresden’s own sights wrap up by day four; everything after that is the wider region. For fewer day trips, see the 6-day or 5-day versions.
Book these before you go
- Historic Green Vault timed ticket : mandatory, roughly €18, NOT included in the SKD combined pass
- SKD combined day ticket : roughly €28 (1-day) or €32 (2-day)
- A place to stay in the Altstadt or Innere Neustadt
Day 1: Frauenkirche and the Zwinger
Morning
The Frauenkirche: collapsed in the 13-15 February 1945 firebombing (the Dresden Historians’ Commission’s 2010 review puts the citywide death toll at roughly 25,000), rebuilt 1993/94-2005, reconsecrated 30 October 2005. Dome climb roughly €8-12.
Afternoon
The Zwinger’s free courtyard and the combined house ticket (roughly €18): the Old Masters Picture Gallery, home to Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, and the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon.
Evening
Brühl’s Terrace and the Fürstenzug mural (both free), then Altstadt dinner.
Day 2: The Green Vault, Semperoper, and Neustadt
Morning
The Historic Green Vault’s mandatory timed slot (roughly €18, book ahead, not in the SKD pass): the collection hit in the 25 November 2019 heist, roughly 21 jewels worth an estimated €100-123 million, five convicted May 2023, about 70% recovered in 2022, the 62-carat Dresden White Diamond still missing.
Afternoon
The Semperoper (roughly €15), then the Neustadt.
Evening
The Kunsthofpassage’s “Funnel Wall” (free) and dinner in Äußere Neustadt.
Day 3: Albertinum and the Elbe
Morning
The Albertinum (roughly €14).
Afternoon
The Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt paddle steamer (since 1836) or the 1893 Blue Wonder bridge and 1901 Schwebebahn.
Evening
Eierschecke and coffee in the Neustadt or Altstadt.
Day 4: Pillnitz Palace and the Grosser Garten
Morning
Pillnitz Palace (roughly €8).
Afternoon
The Grosser Garten and Parkeisenbahn, or the Panometer (roughly €16) if it’s raining.
Evening
Rest up before three straight day trips.
Day 5: Day trip to Saxon Switzerland
Morning
S-Bahn roughly 35-45 minutes to Saxon Switzerland; arrive before 9am for the free Bastei Bridge before the tour buses.
Afternoon
The Bastei viewpoints and, if there’s time, Königstein Fortress.
Evening
Back to Dresden for an early night.
Day 6: Meissen and Moritzburg
Morning
Roughly 33-40 minutes by train to Meissen: the porcelain manufactory (founded 1710) and the Albrechtsburg castle.
Afternoon
On to Moritzburg (roughly 30-40 minutes from Dresden), the lakeside Baroque “Cinderella” hunting palace.
Evening
Return to Dresden.
Day 7: Day trip to Leipzig
Morning
Train roughly 65-90 minutes to Leipzig for a full day: Bach sites around the Thomaskirche, where he was choirmaster.
Afternoon
Leipzig’s role in the 1989 Peaceful Revolution, the wave of protests that helped bring down the East German government.
Evening
Return to Dresden for a farewell dinner. If you’d rather end closer to home, swap this day for a slower second pass through the Neustadt instead.
Getting around and where to stay
DVB trams and regional rail (day tram pass roughly €9.50) cover this whole week, including all three day trips; no car is needed. Stay in the Altstadt (Kempinski Taschenbergpalais, Hyperion Hotel am Schloss) or Innere Neustadt (Bülow Palais).
One concrete tip: book the Historic Green Vault’s timed ticket for day 2 as soon as your dates are set. Across a week with this much else booked, it’s still the one reservation that can quietly wreck a morning if it’s left too late.
For the shorter version of this same trip, see the 6-day itinerary , or the Dresden guide for the full ticket and pacing breakdown.
