3 Days in French Polynesia: A Plan

Three days is enough to add real depth to a French Polynesia trip: a brief look at Tahiti bookending two full nights on Moorea, rather than the rushed day trip our 2 day itinerary has to settle for. Moorea rewards the extra time, its two bays, its lagoon, and its snorkeling are worth more than a few hours.

Day 1: Arrival in Tahiti, then on to Moorea

Land at Faaʻā International Airport (PPT) and keep Tahiti brief, a stop at the Marché de Papeete and a look at Point Venus is plenty for a jet-lagged first afternoon. In the late afternoon, take the Aremiti or Terevau ferry from Papeete to Vaiare on Moorea (30 to 45 minutes, 1,000 to 2,030 XPF each way, sailings roughly every 60 to 90 minutes). Day 2: Moorea’s bays and lagoon

Drive or scooter up to the Belvédère Lookout (about 250m) through the Opunohu Valley, past the agricultural college and old marae, for a view over both Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay at once, split by Mount Rotui between them. In the afternoon, book a lagoon tour out to the shallow Sharks Sandbank to snorkel with blacktip reef sharks and stingrays in standing-depth water, or, in season (July 20 to November 20), swim with humpback whales through a DIREN-accredited operator, boats keep 100m back and cap swimmers at 6 in the water at a time. Round out the day with a stop at the Manutea distillery in the Opunohu Valley, a free self-guided look at pineapple juice and rum production.

Day 3: One more Moorea morning, then depart

Spend the morning either at the Tiki Village cultural center or on a 4x4 tour into the interior, worth the extra time if you haven’t already done the Belvédère drive that way. Catch a mid-afternoon ferry back to Papeete, leaving enough buffer before your departure flight; Moorea’s ferry schedule thins out in the evening, so don’t cut it close.

Before you go

  • Visa and entry: not Schengen, French Polynesia runs its own rules. About 90 days visa-free for most Western nationalities; check specifics on Tahiti Tourisme’s site .
  • Money: the CFP franc (XPF) is fixed at 1 EUR = 119.33 XPF. Bring cash for Moorea’s smaller pensions and stalls, cards cover hotels and resorts. Tipping isn’t expected.
  • Health: no malaria, but dengue is endemic and ciguatera fish poisoning is a real, if occasional, risk, ask locally before eating unfamiliar reef fish. Serious medical issues on Moorea mean evacuation to Papeete, travel insurance with evacuation cover is worth having.

Is 3 days enough for Moorea and Tahiti?

Enough to see Moorea properly and Tahiti briefly, not enough to add Bora Bora without rushing every transfer. If Bora Bora’s overwater bungalows are the point of your trip, look at the 5 day or longer itineraries instead, which give both islands 2 to 3 nights each.
