Day 1: Railay by Longtail, Climb or Beach

Ao Nang beach itself is the launch point, no ticket counter, boats simply beach and go. The crossing to Railay runs about 10 minutes for roughly 100 baht per person, and it’s the only way across in any season: sheer limestone cliffs cut the peninsula off from the mainland completely, there’s no road and there never has been.

Split the day once you land. Everyone else takes the short walking trail from East Railay to Phra Nang Cave Beach, a cove boxed in by cliffs on three sides that regularly gets ranked among the best beaches in the country.

Day 2: A 4 Islands or Hong Islands Boat Day Trip

One day buys one boat tour, not two, so pick a lane. The 4 Islands trip stacks Chicken Island, Koh Poda, and the Tup Island sandbar (it only surfaces at low tide) with a stop back at Phra Nang beach. The Hong Islands trip swaps that route for a lagoon-and-cliff cluster near Ao Thalane, usually paired with mangrove kayaking. They leave from different piers and cover different water, so don’t assume one operator runs both.

If you’re picturing Maya Bay from The Beach, that’s a different trip entirely. Maya Bay sits on Phi Phi, a separate island group that needs its own ferry and, realistically, its own day (it reopened in January 2022 under capped, time-limited visits, so it’s not still closed, just not a two-day add-on). Save it for a longer stay.

Both the 4 Islands and Hong Islands tours run smoothest in the dry season, November through April: calm seas and reliable departures. Book May through October instead and expect the southwest monsoon to add rougher water and, on a bad-weather day, an outright cancellation, so build in a buffer if a boat day is the whole point of your trip. Is 2 days actually enough time in Krabi?

When should you plan a 2-day Krabi trip like this?

November through April, if your dates are flexible at all. Both days here depend on a boat leaving on schedule, so the calm-sea dry season gives you real odds of both happening as planned. Travel May through October and you’ll pay less and see fewer crowds, but plan for the possibility that Day 2’s island tour gets rescheduled or cancelled outright; a two-day trip has no spare day to absorb that the way a longer itinerary does.

Two days is a sprint, not a survey.
