5 Days in Lesotho: First-Timer Plan

Five days adds a genuine highlands day trip, the Mohale Dam, to the Semonkong-and-Malealea loop that anchors the 4 day itinerary . Mohale is an easy insert because it sits on a surfaced road and is doable in a single day out of Maseru, before you commit to the longer Semonkong and Malealea legs. Have a sixth day to spare? The 6 day itinerary pushes north to Ts’ehlanyane instead.

Day 1: Maseru and Thaba Bosiu
Check into the AVANI Maseru or AVANI Lesotho Hotel & Casino, spend the morning at the Maseru Market, then drive to Thaba Bosiu (24km, 30-45 minutes) for the fortress and burial ground of King Moshoeshoe I. It is a tentative UNESCO site only; Lesotho’s actual inscribed World Heritage Site is Sehlabathebe, not on this route.
Day 2: Mohale Dam
Drive about 100km east, roughly 2 hours on the surfaced A3, to Mohale Dam, a 145m concrete-faced rockfill dam feeding the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which exports highland water to South Africa. It is a distinct dam from Katse, further north, so do not expect the same arch structure here. The LHDA runs the project; a lookout and short walk near the wall fill an afternoon before you drive back to Maseru for the night.
Day 3: to Semonkong
Drive 2.5 to 3 hours southeast (tarred, via Nkesi’s Pass) to Semonkong. Walk to the Maletsunyane Falls viewpoint, a 192m single drop, then sit through Semonkong Lodge’s required abseil training session ahead of tomorrow. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: the abseil, then Malealea
Take the 204m Guinness-record abseil in the morning. Backtrack toward Maseru and pick up the road south through Ramabanta to Malealea, since there is no direct route between the two, only rough 4x4 tracks; budget 4 to 4.5 hours of driving total. The final 7km into Malealea is gravel. Arrive for an afternoon pony trek past the Gates of Paradise Pass, and overnight at Malealea Lodge.
Day 5: Malealea and back to Maseru
A shorter morning ride or village visit, then drive back to Maseru, 1.5 to 2 hours, for your onward trip.
Before you go: safety, money, and driving reality
- Visa: visa-free for many nationalities, days vary (UK 90, Australia 30), check yours. The eVisa portal is suspended, contact immigration by email if you need one. Passport needs 90-day validity and 4 blank pages.
- Money: loti pegged 1:1 to the rand, rand spends everywhere in Lesotho. Withdraw cash in Maseru; none of Mohale, Semonkong, or Malealea has a reliable ATM.
- Driving: this trip covers surfaced, tarred, and gravel roads in one week, judge every leg by time, and be off the road before dusk, unlit rural roads with livestock crossings are genuinely dangerous after dark.
- Health: malaria-free (WHO-certified 2012).
- Carry evacuation-grade travel insurance; a serious injury this far from Maseru means evacuation to South Africa.
Is Mohale Dam worth a full day versus Katse Dam?
For 5 days, yes. Mohale sits about 2 hours from Maseru on a surfaced road, doable as a clean day trip, while Katse is 3.5 to 4 hours each way over the high Mafika Lisiu Pass. Save Katse for a longer trip; see the 6 day itinerary if you want to add highland distance instead of Mohale.
Do I need a 4x4 for the whole 5 days?
Not for Maseru, Thaba Bosiu, or Mohale, all sedan-friendly. High clearance helps for the last stretch into Malealea and gives you a margin on the Semonkong road if the weather turns.
Five days is enough to see all three of Lesotho’s headline highland experiences without rushing any one of them, just keep the driving days honest about how long mountain roads actually take.
