4 Days: Lhasa and Tibet
Four days is where this itinerary starts to feel like a real Tibet trip rather than a Lhasa layover: two city days banked, then two genuine pushes higher, Ganden first, Yamdrok Lake second. This builds on our 3-day plan , same permit and city-grounding days, one extra day trip added at the end.

Day 1: Arrival, and the modern city you didn’t expect
Fly into Lhasa Gonggar Airport, roughly an hour’s drive from downtown, or arrive by the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, oxygen piped into the cabin as it crosses the Tanggula Pass above 5,000 meters. Either way, your permit gets checked before you board, so travel with it clipped to your passport.
What surprises most people on arrival is how modern most of Lhasa actually looks. Broad avenues, shopping malls, Han-run businesses and new hotel towers dominate the newer districts, a stark contrast to the whitewashed, incense-thick alleys of the Barkhor old town a short walk away. Take the afternoon slow, you’re at 3,656 meters and altitude sickness on day one is genuinely common, so hydrate, skip alcohol, and keep activity light: a walk through the Barkhor kora, prayer wheels spinning under your hand as you go. Sort your VPN tonight, since Google, WhatsApp, and most Western apps are blocked here, and get cash or Alipay sorted, since foreign cards are frequently useless outside the big international hotels.
Day 2: Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple
The Potala Palace runs a capped, real-name reservation system, no same-day tickets at the gate, sold out routinely in peak season, so your agency needs to have this locked before you paid a deposit. Inside, expect a strict window of about an hour through the Red and White Palaces, the old seat of the Dalai Lamas, dense with chapels, burial stupas, and painted corridors.
Afternoon at Jokhang Temple, the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism, is where you’ll see devotion up close: pilgrims prostrating on worn stone outside, mantras murmured inside. No photos of the chapel interiors or Buddha images, a rule enforced here more strictly than anywhere else on this trip.
Day 3: Ganden Monastery
By day three you’ve had two full days of city-level acclimatization, exactly the buffer worth banking before pushing higher. Ganden Monastery sits around 4,300 meters, about 90 minutes out, and rewards the climb with a ridge-top kora and views down the valley worth the drive alone.
Day 4: Yamdrok Lake, then departure
This is the payoff day. Yamdrok Lake , turquoise and glacier-fed, reached via the Kamba La pass at nearly 4,800 meters, runs 3-4 hours each way through dramatic high-altitude scenery. Don’t try to squeeze in Namtso Lake instead on a trip this length: it sits even higher, the altitude jump from Lhasa is severe, and rushing it as a same-day add-on is the easiest way to feel wrecked right before you fly home. Yamdrok gives you comparable drama with a far gentler profile. Head back to Lhasa with real buffer before the airport or station; your Tibet Travel Permit gets checked again on the way out exactly as it was on the way in.
Worth knowing
A Tibet Travel Permit and a guide for the full trip are mandatory for every foreign passport except Hong Kong and Macau; get this moving through a licensed agency 20-30 days before you fly. Carry cash, since Alipay and WeChat dominate and foreign cards rarely work outside the largest hotels, and set up a VPN before you land. Pack proper layers for both day-trip days, the temperature drop at Ganden’s and Yamdrok’s altitude is sharper than anything you’ll feel in the city itself. Want a recovery day between the two pushes? Our 5-day itinerary adds one.
