4 Days in the Maldives: First-Timer Plan
Four nights is close to the floor for a real Maldives stay once you count transfer days on both ends. One base, resort or local island, for the whole trip; here’s how to fill it.

Day 1: Arrival, transfer, settle in
File the free IMUGA Traveller Declaration online 48-96 hours before you fly, if not already done; the free 30-day visa is stamped on arrival at Velana International Airport (MLE).
Resort track: speedboat ($100-250 round trip) or seaplane ($290-700+, daylight-only, roughly 6am-4:30pm) to your resort. Check in and swim the house reef that afternoon.
Budget track: ferry ($1.50-3, about 90 minutes) or speedboat ($25-30, about 30 minutes) to Maafushi or a similar local island. Check into a guesthouse ($50-150/day) and head to the fenced bikini-beach zone.
End the day locking in tomorrow’s excursion booking; the good operators fill fast in peak season.
Day 2: The house reef, properly
Spend the day on your own reef: snorkeling if it’s your first time, or a two-tank dive if you’re certified, with dive insurance carried regardless since most atolls have no decompression chamber. Local-island travelers can add a short reef-walk at low tide for a slower, closer look at the coral.
End today confirming pickup time for tomorrow’s boat trip, since sea conditions can shift a departure window with little notice.
Day 3: Mantas or whale sharks
Roughly June through November, near Baa Atoll, book the Hanifaru Bay manta swim ($125), snorkel-only under permit with scuba banned and a strict 3-meter rule. Outside that window, or from a South Ari base, book a whale-shark tour ($60-250) instead; South Ari’s population is resident year-round.
End the day treating tomorrow as a flexible one, since a weather-delayed boat trip today can push into it.
Day 4: A sandbank or Malé, then departure
Book a sandbank-and-snorkeling trip for the classic clear-water finish, or, if your route passes through Malé anyway, spend a half day at Hukuru Miskiy (1658, UNESCO tentative list) and the fish market instead.
End the trip building real slack into your final transfer; a seaplane leg especially depends on daylight and weather, not your departure time.
Do you need a visa for the Maldives?
Most passports get a free 30-day visa on arrival. Every traveler must also separately file the IMUGA Traveller Declaration online, 48-96 hours before both arrival and departure.
Is 4 days enough for a resort stay?
