4 Days in Montevideo: First-Timer Plan
Four days lets you cover Montevideo’s city core properly and add two full day trips. Be honest with yourself: the city alone is a 2-3 day destination, so this plan leans on Uruguay’s countryside and coast to fill it out well.
Day 1
Walk Ciudad Vieja: Plaza Matriz, the Cathedral, the Cabildo, and Plaza Independencia with the Palacio Salvo, tallest in South America when it opened in 1927. Lunch at Mercado del Puerto runs $15-25. In the evening, walk the Rambla toward sunset and have dinner in Ciudad Vieja for $15-30. Tip for the day: pay with a foreign card to cut restaurant VAT from 22% to 9% automatically.
Day 2
Visit Estadio Centenario and the Museo del Futbol, home to the ball from the 1930 World Cup final. Have lunch at Mercado Agricola (MAM), $10-20, then spend the afternoon at Pocitos beach. Dinner at a parrilla runs $20-35 with wine. Tip for the day: use Uber or Cabify to get between the stadium, market, and beach, since Montevideo has no metro.
Day 3
Take the bus to Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO old town about 2 to 2.5 hours away, round trip fare around $30-40. Walk the cobblestone streets and riverside walls, with lunch in town for $10-20. Return to Montevideo by evening. Tip for the day: book your bus ticket ahead in summer, since seats can sell out at Tres Cruces terminal.
Day 4
Spend the morning at Feria de Tristan Narvaja if it falls on a Sunday, otherwise head straight to Canelones wine country, about 40 minutes out, for a Tannat tasting at Bodega Bouza, book ahead, tastings run $15-30. Have lunch at the winery or back in the city, $10-20. In the afternoon, wander Punta Carretas, including the 1876 lighthouse and the former-prison shopping mall, then close the trip with one more Rambla walk at sunset. Tip for the day: a rental car makes Canelones easier, but a guided tour or taxi also works fine for a single day.
Practical Notes
This plan intentionally spends half its days outside Montevideo proper, which is the honest way to fill four days here without padding the city portion.
