The Gambia 2-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Banjul and Surroundings

Morning

  • Arrival in Banjul: Arrive at Banjul International Airport (BJL) and take a taxi or bus to your hotel.
  • National Museum: Visit the National Museum to learn about Gambia’s history, culture, and natural heritage. (open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm)

Afternoon

  • Albert Market: Explore Albert Market, one of the largest markets in Banjul, where you can find local handicrafts, food, and souvenirs.
  • Banjul Harbour: Take a stroll along the harbour and enjoy the views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Evening

  • Dinner at a Local Restaurant: Try some traditional Gambian cuisine like peanut stew or benachin (a dish made with rice, meat, and vegetables) at a local restaurant.
  • Kora Players: Enjoy a live performance by kora players, a traditional West African stringed instrument.

Day 2: Up River Gambia

Morning

  • Ferry to Barra: Take the ferry from Banjul to Barra (approximately 1 hour) and enjoy the views of the river.
  • Juffureh Village: Visit Juffureh Village, a historic settlement that was once a major trading post. Explore the village, meet the locals, and learn about their way of life.

Afternoon

  • Kunta Kinteh Island: Take a boat trip to Kunta Kinteh Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former slave trading post. Learn about the history of the transatlantic slave trade and its impact on West Africa.
  • James Island: Visit James Island, another historic island with a rich history dating back to the 15th century.

Evening

  • Return to Banjul: Take the ferry back to Banjul and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

  • The Gambian dalasi (GMD) is the local currency, although US dollars and euros are widely accepted.

Visa Requirements
