2 Days in Nairobi: First-Timer Plan

Before you land. Nairobi has real street crime, mugging, phone-snatching, and smash-and-grab theft at traffic lights, so use Uber, Bolt, or Little rather than walking, especially after dark, keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight, and stick to Westlands, Karen, Gigiri, Kilimani, or Lavington as your base. That sits alongside millions of trouble-free visits a year, this is honest big-city caution, not a reason to cancel. Check your government’s current advisory before you go.
Two days is honestly enough for Nairobi’s headline sights, this plan assumes you’re bookending a safari elsewhere rather than treating the city as the whole trip.
Day 1
Land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and take a pre-arranged transfer or Uber to your hotel, budget 25-45 minutes depending on traffic and route, roughly KES 2,000-3,000 ($15-23, verify) for the ride. Check in around Westlands or Karen, then head straight to Nairobi National Park for an afternoon game drive, the only national park bordering a capital city, with lions, black rhino, giraffe, zebra, and buffalo, but no resident elephants. Non-resident entry runs around $80/adult (2026, verify) plus a vehicle fee. In the evening, have dinner at the Carnivore, the Langata institution’s all-you-can-eat meat buffet runs roughly KES 3,500 ($27) per person. Tip to end the day: book your Sheldrick slot for tomorrow morning tonight if you haven’t already, the nursery only accepts advance bookings.
Day 2
Morning starts early: the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant nursery, inside the park via the Mbagathi Gate, only opens to the public for a single daily window, 11am-noon, so plan your morning around arriving by 10:45am. Entry runs around $20/person, separate from park fees. From there, head to the Giraffe Centre in Karen to hand-feed Rothschild’s giraffes, roughly KES 1,500, don’t confuse it with Giraffe Manor next door, a separate overnight-guests-only hotel. Round out the afternoon at the nearby Karen Blixen Museum, the “Out of Africa” author’s farmhouse, modest entry fee. Head back to your hotel in the early evening to pack, and use your last Nairobi dinner for something lighter before an early flight out or on to safari. Tip to end the day: reconfirm your onward flight or safari transfer the night before, JKIA-to-Wilson connections need real buffer time given Nairobi traffic.
