Day 1: Prague, Your Base Camp

Land and settle into Stare Mesto or Mala Strana; every gateway trip on this route starts and ends at Hlavni nadrazi, so a central base saves real time. Grab a stamped transit ticket the moment you arrive (an unstamped ticket is invalid even if you already paid), then spend the afternoon on Old Town Square and Charles Bridge. Day 2: Kutna Hora and the Sedlec Ossuary

Trains from Hlavni nadrazi run roughly every hour, take about 50 minutes, and cost CZK 100 to 140 one way; check current timetables directly on cd.cz , the national rail operator. The Sedlec Ossuary, a small chapel decorated in human bone, now requires a timed online ticket booked through sedlec.info : CZK 220 adult, CZK 150 reduced, CZK 80 child. Pair it with St Barbara’s Cathedral in town, and be back in Prague by early evening. This is the cheapest, easiest gateway trip on this whole itinerary.

Day 3: Karlstejn Castle

Trains from Hlavni nadrazi take about 40 minutes to Karlstejn village, then it is a 2.5km, 30 to 40 minute walk uphill to the castle gate, no shuttle available. Charles IV built Karlstejn in the 14th century to house the Bohemian crown jewels, and the interior is visited by timed, guided tour only, no free wandering through the halls. Popular slots, especially weekends and summer, sell out days ahead, so book directly through hrad-karlstejn.cz rather than risking arrival-day tickets. Since this is only a half-day trip, head back to Prague for the afternoon and dinner in Vinohrady, a genuinely local alternative to the tourist-priced restaurants around Old Town Square.

Is Cesky Krumlov Worth It as a Day Trip?

Not on a three day trip, and not really ever. Buses and the one direct train both run 2.5 to 3 hours each way, leaving only a few rushed hours in a town built for lingering. If Cesky Krumlov matters to you, our 7 day plan gives it a proper overnight instead.

Is Karlstejn Castle Worth the Uphill Walk?

Yes, for the payoff. The 30 to 40 minute climb from the village is genuinely part of the experience, and the castle itself, built to house the Bohemian crown jewels, is more substantial than a quick photo stop. Book the guided interior tour ahead of time; showing up without a reservation risks a wasted trip if slots are full.

Book the Sedlec Ossuary and Karlstejn tour slots before you land. Both are timed and both do sell out on summer weekends, which would blow up either of these gateway days.
