Day 1: Saint-Denis and the Saint-Gilles lagoon
Land at Roland Garros, pick up the car, and give Saint-Denis an hour at Le Barachois and the Rue de Paris mansions (official listings here ). Then it’s 35-40 minutes to Saint-Gilles-les-Bains for the lagoon, the one part of this coast where swimming and surfing have never been banned. The rest of the open west coast has been off-limits since a real 2013 shark-attack cluster; stay inside the reef.
Day 2: Cilaos, up the 400 bends
More than 400 numbered hairpins carry you into a proper spa town: 19th-century thermal baths, Reunion’s only wine (Chenin, Pinot Noir, Malbec), and the small pale Ilet a Cordes lentils. Day 3: Piton de la Fournaise, the active volcano
Drive 2-2.5 hours from the Cilaos area to Pas de Bellecombe (2,311m). Day 4: Salazie and Hell-Bourg
Head north to the Salazie cirque. Hell-Bourg is one of France’s officially listed “Plus Beaux Villages,” all carved wooden lambrequins on Creole houses, with the Voile de la Mariée waterfall dropping in tiers just outside town. Unlike Cilaos, there’s no thermal spa or wine here, just a genuinely scenic half-day: walk the village, see the falls, eat lunch, and drive back toward Saint-Denis to close the loop.

Why is Hell-Bourg worth a full day and not a drive-by?
Because the road ends there, so there’s no rushing through on the way to somewhere else. Hell-Bourg is a genuine Creole village with real architecture, not a reconstruction, plus a real waterfall a short walk away. Give it the afternoon rather than the 20-minute photo stop most rushed itineraries allow.
Which cirque should I pick if I can only do one?
Cilaos, for a short trip. It bundles a thermal spa, wine tasting, and the Piton des Neiges trailhead into one reachable base, while Salazie is the better half-day if you already have Cilaos covered and want pure scenery with minimal effort.
